Pretty yummy cakes from Ugly Cake Shop

SCROLL DOWN FOR CONTEST RESULTS!

You don’t need to use a birthday as an excuse to eat cake. My friend Lisa, self-professed “Not-so-Ugly” baker from Ugly Cake Shop, has provided some reasons why.

First of all, the cakes are really yummy. A few Saturdays ago, Asher and I were invited to sample Lisa’s offerings at a tea time session at Working Title Cafe in Arab Street. They taste as good as they look.

Melissa cupcakes promise a taste of fresh strawberries, cream and chocolate in every bite
New Zesty Zee lemon cupcake ($4 each) and lemon cake (7-inch $55; 9-inch $70)
A Tiffany-coloured ombre cake, Big Daddy Jr cupcakes and peanut butter cupcakes

Secondly, part of Ugly Cake Shop’s profits go towards buying meat, eggs and other much-needed protein sources for the kids in Shallom School, a school in Timor Leste set up by Brazilian missionaries and supported by Agape Baptist Church.

Thirdly, Ugly Cake Shop does not believe in using artificial colouring, artificial flavours, fondant, gum paste or marzipan, as the baker believes in using natural ingredients. This is why Lisa named her shop “Ugly”.

Having said that, Lisa  will add artificial food dye to create certain colours upon request. Please indicate when you check-out!

We tried several flavours at the tea party: Big Daddy Jr (Super Chocolatey Cupcakes with nutella and valrhona), Zesty Zee (lemon cream), Juliana (salted caramel), peanut butter and Melissa. Prices start from $3.50 a piece.

Asher’s personal favourite is the Melissa cupcake ($4.50), made with fresh strawberries, rum and French cocoa powder. He loves the frosting and the whole thing is gone in a jiffy. Melissa is also available as a whole cake (7-inch $70; 9-inch $100). They take orders at least a week in advance due to high demand.

Melissa cake and cupcakes look good and taste even better

That day’s event also saw the founders of The Accessory Report complement the scrumptious goodies with equally eye-catching bling. The online store carries lots of statement necklaces, earrings and bracelets. If you’re looking for one of those colourful cabochon necklaces that are so in these days, this is the best place to browse. They’re having a sale now!
