Cocotte Communal Restaurant Bar @ Wanderlust Hotel

Tucked away in Dickson Road in the colourful Jalan Besar/ Little India heritage area, is a quaint little refurbished shophouse-turned boutique hotel, Wanderlust.

Wanderlust

The building was originally an old school built it 1920s. The hotel houses four thematic levels of 29 rooms by award winning Singapore design agencies, with each group given full creative freedom.

Wanderlust has picked up a whole closet full of awards, including Singapore Tatler’s “Best of Singapore 2013” Best Boutique Hotel and Trip Advisor’s Travellers’ Choice® 2012 Trendiest Hotels.

Cocotte Communal Restaurant Bar is located on the first floor of Wanderlust.

When Rachel and I stepped into Wanderlust with Asher, we felt like we had entered into a “Good Old Singapore” utopia. Old barber chairs, tin advertisement signboards, among other yesteryears memorabilia greeted us.

The interior decor for Cocotte kept to the same theme.

Even before we tasted anything, we were already made happy by our surrounding.

We arrived at just about noon, perfect for a lazy Sunday brunch since all three of us woke up late that morning.

Brunch menu

Here are the dishes we ate:

Asparagus, laguiole cheese and fennel salad – tossed with rocket leaves, quail eggs and citrus dressing (S$16)
Grilled squid and roasted cauliflower salad – served with florets, lemon, capers and baby swiss chard leaves (S$15)
Shredded Pork Confit Sandwich (S$15)
The French Onion “Soup” Sandwich (S$10)

Simple food items, but pretty satisfying.

Rachel and I love their salads and onion soup sandwich (must try). Yes, you read correctly – they made a soup into a sandwich that you can hold in your hands without mess. Very clever.

Newly launched pastries counter, with items at very reasonable prices

The desserts were thick and rich. The intense Chocolate Lavender Tart ($6.95) uses Valrhona 85% Abinao couverture chocolate. I love dark chocolate, but I find it too strong for one person to eat it alone and would recommend sharing.

Asher picked the chocolate tart

The Pastry Counter at Cocotte is newly launched  and is open from 12noon daily till 10pm, Monday to Saturday and till 3pm on Sunday. As is with the restaurant’s menu the pastries are ingredient-driven and reflects changes in the seasons. For example stone fruits such as plums and peaches from France come in the middle of the year at the height of the European summer along with berries, melons and other fresh produce.

Prices are very reasonable, with items starting from just S$2 or just S$1.50 for a freshly baked croissant.

The restaurant is a very nice place to chill out. It is quiet, cosy and brings back fond memories of a happier Singapore where material wealth was not the epitome of success as it is now.

I am very likely to visit again.
