Two weeks ago, I brought my wife and son to iFly Singapore for a family outing. I have tried indoor skydiving with iFly previously and blogged about it. It boasted my confidence to attempt tandem skydiving in Wollongong, New South Wales subsequently and I am thankful for the experience.
This time round, I wanted my wife, Rachel, to go through the iFly experience and enjoy the thrill of true free-fall conditions, just like skydiving. My son, Asher and I were there to give our moral support (plus I wanted our son to laugh at his mum’s distorted face inside the wind tunnel).
Spanning 16.5 feet wide and 56.5 feet tall, iFly Singapore is equipped with the world’s largest themed wind tunnel for indoor skydiving. It also features an 18 feet tall acrylic glass wall that lets you enjoy an unparalleled view of South China Sea and Siloso Beach.
Admission for two flights cost S$89 for an adult and S$79 for a child under 12 years-old. Alternatively you can also purchase the family admission for 2 adults and 2 children at S$285.
You need to arrive 1.5 hours prior to your scheduled flight time for professional training, guidance and gearing up by iFly’s certified instructors. These are all included in the admission fees, including gear rental.
Here are some pictures of Rachel going through her training:
A skydive experience with iFly costs one-fifth that of a tandem jump. When I was in Wollongong for my tandem jump, the instructors mentioned they were envious of Singaporeans because we have iFly in our country. They shared that some competitive skydivers regularly flew to Singapore to train in the wind tunnels as they can clock much more flight hours and practice time in the wind tunnel as opposed to making their way up and down from the sky via an airplane!
How is the flight experience like? Check out these photos of Rachel’s first flight:
Having tried both indoor skydiving and tandem skydiving, I would say each has its own merit.
For tandem skydiving, you have an instructor strapped behind you. You know you will be safe for sure and the flight is steady. In terms of view and thrill, nothing beats the real thing.
The iFly wind tunnel gives you more flight time and save the hassle (and cost) of flying up the sky via an airplane. You get to maneuver your body more freely without someone or a chunky parachute strapped behind you. Better still, you get to experience skydiving “stunts”, just like Rachel did with the guidance or her iFly instructor, flying up and down the wind tunnel at great speed (Rachel’s flight is from 0:55):
If you are thinking of trying tandem skydiving, do try out indoor skydiving at iFly first for an introduction. If you already tried tandem skydiving or is a certified professional, you can still sign up for the professional packages to clock more flight time and hone your skills. 🙂
