Yesterday, a group of avid social media users and other members of public celebrated the first Singapore Social Media Day (SGSMD), with a day of fun-filled activities at *SCAPE. SGSMD 2011 is an adaptation of World Social Media Day, which was initiated by internet news blog Mashable in 2010 and celebrated on 30 June.

This is the first year Singapore is having such an event.

Organised by a group of volunteer bloggers and social media enthusiasts, the event is presented by HTC and supported by omy.sg.

To express the spirit of Social Media, the organising committee has come up with a simple yet highly apt tag word “SoMe!”, which apart from being an abbreviation of Social Media, also speaks volumes about how people of today engage various social media channels to express themselves on a daily basis.

Kudos the the SGSMD 2011 organising committee, particularly, Mint, Smith, Calvin and Darren for a job well done.

I was only able to pop by for a short while during noon and after 7pm as I need to work at another event. Nonetheless, from what I witness, I like and I admire. 🙂

Singapore is a very small country with a close-knitted blogging and social media community. It feels really great to see so many friends and bloggers alike come out in support of SGSMD 2011 to raise money for the Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund (SPMF).

The way I see it, this event can only get bigger and better with the advent of social media in the years ahead. I am looking forward to the second Singapore Social Media Day next year already. Are you? 🙂
