Outdoor dining at Kichn

Rachel and I chanced upon this hidden little cafe-restaurant, Kichn, located in secluded Albert Court, near Little India.

The restaurant is so small that they only have outdoor dining area. The interior is for the kitchen and the bar counter.

However, Rachel and I enjoyed the cosy, quiet environment. Albert Court is quite secluded, with not much natural human traffic. Unless someone recommended you the restaurant, it is very unlikely anyone will discover it by chance.

Rachel and I happened to be there that night on the eve of Deepavali to soak in the atmosphere in the Little India area. We were going for Indian food, but decided on trying out Kichn when we chanced upon it, attracted by their “Cooking Up a Storm” tag line.

Cooking up a Storm - it even says so on their wipes

Ordering at Kichn is done by the customers with colour pencils and some sheets of their customised menu forms. You can basically mix and match your own main courses by choosing your staple, the topping and the sauce to go with them. Likewise for their drink menu whereby you mix and match whatever is on the menu to build your own custom drink.

Rachel ordered a spaghetti staple with seafood topping and chili crab sauce. I had a spaghetti staple with beef patty and bolognese sauce. For drinks, Rachel ordered a lychee green tea mix while I had the special for the day – lime blended.

The main course comes in a box like this

The main courses came in brown paper boxes that has its interior treated with some non-stick material so that the food won’t get all soggy, clinging to the paper, leaving grease stains. I usually dislike disposable cutlery and utensils, but Kichn gets away with it via their quirk factor. I sure hope they practise recycling though.

Food quality wise, both of us enjoyed our meals very much.  It’s not fine dining of course, but for a cafe restaurant, Kichn whips up a pretty decent fare. The chili crab sauce was particularly memorable, do try it if you visit Kichn.

The drinks we ordered

The drinks were good too. The lychee green tea seems a peculiar mix, but we enjoyed the flavour. Share with me if you come up with any other interesting mixture of your own.

Prices at Kichn is pretty reasonable. The bill came to around $25 for a two pax dinner. There’s no GST or service charge. Prices are as per what you order on the menu. That doesn’t mean that there’s no service. In fact, the young girl serving our table was very polite and attentive. Kudos to her though we didn’t get her name.

Our only complaint was that the portion was a little small.
