“UCKY” plaza has got good food
First time I tried Filipino cooking – as in, authentic Filipino food, not Singaporean food cooked by Filipino domestic helpers.
Rachel brought Leon and I to this interesting Filipino restaurant called Kabayan Filipino fast food restaurant hidden in a corner in Lucky Plaza on the third floor.
Here’s the exact address: 304 Orchard Rd #03-25 Lucky Plaza
The place is great! There were not many locals sighted there. Also, there were no pesky posters boasting of wins from the millions of overrated local food guides like Yummy King, Makansutra, etc. Hence not yet having to pander to mass appeal.
Leon commented that eating at Kabayan feels like dining in another country. I sort of agree with him too, given that we don’t really understand what’s on the menu, and wasn’t able to communicate too well with the restaurant staff.
As a whole, the food was great (and different) and the price was reasonable. I will definitely visit Kabayan again.
Here are some pictures to share.
At the food counter
Lunch crowd
Fried spring rolls
Interior of Kabayan – it looks more like a food court than a fast food restaurant
Filipino popiah – sweet and tangy with lots of veggies
Variety of deserts available at the counter
The BBQ rice set (comes with a giant satay, an egg and some tomato salad)
Filipino-style Chap Chye Peng
Desert which tasted like Ice Kachang, but with jackfruit, mango and custard pudding
Fried banana wrapped like popiah
Topsilog set
Longsilog set
BBQ rice set with milk fish
Custard desert with Jack fruits topping

rachel always has the best recommendations at Lucky Plaza! i love her recommendation of the Surabaya Ayam Penyat!
Thank you, Melvin. :-) Now you know where to go if you are looking for more exotic, yet reasonably-priced food when you're in Orchard.
The fried banana (called toron) is totally worth the extra calories, at $1 a piece. You'll be super lucky if you can get it when it's piping hot. The banana is not just wrapped in popiah-like skin - it's also drizzled with a subtle jackfruit-flavoured syrup.
do they sell Balut Egg?
Is that the egg with the little duckling inside? Never see that.
Wow...look nice! Worth trying it! Thanks for the recommendation!
Hi,
Guys you could also try Philippines cuisine on Cavite Restaurant. The restaurant was inspired in Philippines Independence.
