Martial arts legend and international action star Jackie Chan made a memorable appearance at Pei Chun Public School in Toa Payoh today, spending the morning with students and some of Singapore’s most promising young wushu athletes in an event aimed at inspiring the next generation to pursue their sporting dreams.
Joining Jackie Chan at the event were Minister for National Development Chee Hong Tat and Kiat Lim from the Lim Family Foundation. The visit brought together around 900 Primary 4 to 6 students and 21 past and present recipients of the Singapore Olympic Foundation-Peter Lim Scholarship (SOFPLS) for wushu.
The morning began with an energetic showcase by students and alumni, led by head coach Wilson Yap Weisheng, featuring wushu demonstrations alongside dragon and lion dance performances. Jackie Chan then officiated an auspicious dragon eye dotting ceremony before taking part in an intimate sharing session, where he spoke about the values of resilience, discipline and cultural pride. Students also had the opportunity to ask questions during a lively Q&A session before the event concluded with a mass group photograph featuring everyone in attendance.
The appearance continues the Lim Family Foundation’s tradition of bringing internationally renowned personalities to Singapore through its charity and community initiatives, giving young people opportunities to interact with global icons. Previous guests have included Cristiano Ronaldo, Lewis Hamilton and JJ Lin.
Today’s visit follows the annual SOFPLS awards ceremony held on 30 June at ITE College Central, where more than 400 young athletes across multiple sports were recognised for their achievements. Since the scholarship programme was launched in 2010, the Lim Family Foundation has contributed more than S$20 million to support 5,629 athletes in their sporting journeys. Among them are 163 wushu scholarship recipients over the past 16 years, many of whom have gone on to represent Singapore at regional and world championship competitions.
Among the scholarship recipients present at the event were Chua Xin Yun and Cholene Aw Rui En, two of Singapore’s standout wushu athletes. Chua made history in 2024 as the only Singaporean to be named the International Wushu Federation’s Wushu Taolu Rising Star of the Year after winning a gold and silver medal at the 9th World Junior Wushu Championships in Brunei. Cholene recently claimed three gold medals at the 5th World Taijiquan Championships in Burgas, Bulgaria, earning the title of world champion.
