Sony has officially announced its latest flagship smartphone, the Xperia 1 VIII, introducing a major leap in mobile photography through a new AI Camera Assistant powered by Xperia Intelligence, alongside upgraded imaging hardware, refined design, and improved performance and battery efficiency.
At the core of the Xperia 1 VIII is the new AI Camera Assistant, which helps users capture better photos by automatically analysing scenes and suggesting optimal camera settings such as colour tones, lens selection, and bokeh effects. The system draws from Sony’s Creative Look imaging philosophy developed through its α camera technology, allowing users to select recommended styles with a simple tap for more personalised results.
The smartphone also introduces a significantly upgraded telephoto camera featuring a 1/1.56 inch image sensor, approximately four times larger than its predecessor. This allows for greater detail and clarity in distant subjects, particularly in low light conditions. All three rear cameras, spanning 16mm, 24mm, and 70mm focal lengths, are designed to deliver improved noise reduction and dynamic range performance, producing images that approach full frame level quality even in challenging lighting environments.
Sony has further enhanced imaging performance through RAW multi frame processing across all lenses, improving both dynamic range and noise reduction simultaneously. This helps preserve highlight and shadow detail while maintaining accurate colour reproduction and sharper image clarity in high contrast scenes.
The Xperia 1 VIII also features a refreshed design language known as ORE design, inspired by natural gemstones. The device comes in four colour options, Graphite Black, Iolite Silver, Garnet Red, and Native Gold. The design incorporates refined surface textures for improved grip and comfort, while retaining signature Sony features such as the dedicated camera shutter button and a 3.5mm headphone jack for high quality wired audio.
Audio performance is also upgraded with new full stage stereo speakers featuring identical left and right units. These deliver deeper bass, clearer vocals, and a wider soundstage for a more immersive listening experience across music, movies, and gaming.
Under the hood, the Xperia 1 VIII is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Mobile Platform, delivering a reported 20 percent boost in performance. The device supports faster app launches, smoother multitasking, and enhanced gaming and content creation experiences. Battery life has also been improved, offering up to two days of usage, along with up to four years of battery health durability. Sony has also introduced processing optimisation for high power usage scenarios such as map applications to improve overall efficiency.
For added protection, an optional Xperia 1 VIII case will be available, featuring a translucent finish designed to complement the phone’s aesthetic. The case includes a built in stand for both portrait and landscape viewing and is designed to resist yellowing over time.
The Xperia 1 VIII will be available for order starting 13 May 2026. An early bird promotion running from 13 May to 30 June 2026 will include a free WF 1000XM6 noise cancelling headset worth S9 and a first party casing worth S, subject to availability.
