Cinema lovers are in for a nostalgic treat as Golden Village brings back the magic of Hong Kong’s cinematic golden age with Hong Kong Classics Rewind, a specially curated film showcase running from 28 March to 19 April 2026.
Taking place on weekends at GV VivoCity and GV Century Square, the programme celebrates iconic Hong Kong films from the late 1980s to 1990s, an era widely regarded as one of the most influential in Asian cinema. All films will be screened in their original Cantonese language, preserving the authenticity of the viewing experience.
The showcase is divided into four themed weekends, each highlighting a different aspect of Hong Kong filmmaking:
Week 1: Comics to Cinema (28 – 29 March)
The opening weekend explores the transition of popular manhua (comic books) into blockbuster films, featuring The Storm Riders and A Man Called Hero—two visually striking adaptations that captured audiences with their larger-than-life storytelling.
Week 2: The Stephen Chow Effect (4 – 5 April)
A tribute to the comedic genius of Stephen Chow, this line-up includes Fight Back to School and Flirting Scholar, showcasing his signature blend of slapstick humour and sharp wit that helped redefine comedy in Hong Kong cinema.
Week 3: Her Time, Her Power (11 – 12 April)
This segment spotlights powerful female-led narratives with Stage Door and The Soong Sisters, celebrating stories of strength, complexity and resilience.
Week 4: Masters of the Craft (18 – 19 April)
Closing the programme are films that embody the star power and storytelling mastery of the era, including Who’s the Woman, Who’s the Man and the iconic gambling drama God of Gamblers.
Hong Kong cinema has long been admired for its dynamic storytelling, unique visual style, and global cultural influence. Hong Kong Classics Rewind pays homage to this legacy by bringing these beloved titles back to theatres, offering both longtime fans and new audiences the rare chance to experience them on the big screen once again.
