Not every Chinese New Year celebration needs to be extravagant. Sushi Express keeps things practical with its 开运鱼生 Good Luck Yu Sheng Set, a festive option that is affordable, generous and easy to share.
The yu sheng arrived in an ingot shaped box, a traditional symbol of prosperity for Chinese New Year, and it immediately added a cheerful, festive touch to our table.
Inside, every ingredient was neatly packed in small containers, and the set came with chopsticks for up to six people, which I thought was a surprisingly thoughtful touch.
The value of the set really stood out. It includes eight slices of abalone flavour inspired pieces and eight slices of fresh Norwegian salmon sashimi all in one platter. The salmon was fresh and sliced generously, so it did not get lost once everything was mixed together. The abalone added a firmer bite, giving the yu sheng more texture and making it feel complete. At .90, it felt very worth it. The combination of ingredients made the yu sheng generous, flavourful and truly festive.
Even though the set is meant for four to six people, it easily fed all twelve of us. Everyone got a proper share, and it still felt satisfying and filling.
Sushi Express is also rolling out its limited edition Taste of Fortune 好运来 sushi series for Chinese New Year, available for dine in at their outlets from 1 January to 28 February 2026. The collection features three festive creations inspired by traditional symbols of luck and prosperity.
There’s the Auspicious Citrus Aburi Salmon, torched Norwegian salmon dressed in a creamy, tangy tangerine sauce that adds a bright, slightly sweet-savoury punch. The Golden Abalone sushi feels luxurious with abalone on shell, paired with a tangy yusheng-style sauce and a sprinkle of edible gold powder. Finally, the Scallop of Fortune offers torched scallop topped with mentaiko mayonnaise and herring roe, giving each bite a rich, creamy umami that still feels light enough to enjoy.
