Google Expands AI Investment in Singapore with Larger R&D Footprint and New National Initiatives

Google has announced a major expansion of its artificial intelligence (AI) investments in Singapore, deepening its research and development (R&D) footprint while rolling out new initiatives to support the nation’s AI ambitions. The announcement was made at the second Google for Singapore event, attended by Minister for Digital Development and Information Josephine Teo, and aligns with Singapore’s National AI Strategy.

Strengthening Singapore as a Global R&D Hub

Singapore has served as Google’s Asia Pacific headquarters since 2007 and is now home to nearly 3,000 employees. The company’s presence is backed by a US$5 billion investment in technical infrastructure, including four data centres and cloud regions, as well as the establishment of the Google DeepMind Research Lab to advance AI innovation across APAC.

Building on this foundation, Google will further expand its local R&D capabilities by scaling specialised teams in software engineering, UX design and research science, with a strategic push to grow its Cloud engineering footprint. The move reinforces Singapore’s position as a global innovation hub and complements the government’s Research, Innovation and Enterprise (RIE) 2030 plan aimed at deepening research excellence and driving impactful innovation.

Alongside this expansion, Google unveiled new initiatives centred on four key pillars: solving societal challenges, driving enterprise innovation, building a future-ready workforce, and creating a secure AI ecosystem.

Solving Societal Challenges Through AI

In healthcare, Google is partnering with local organisations to strengthen AI infrastructure and advance preventative health solutions for Singapore’s ageing population.

Google has expanded its collaboration with AI Singapore (AISG) to support the development of the nation’s AI infrastructure for health. By providing access to MedGemma, Google’s open medical AI model, the initiative will help fine-tune a foundational health model tailored to Singapore’s unique healthcare landscape. The goal is to empower healthcare providers to develop AI-assisted applications suited to local needs.

To promote preventative health, Google is also working with homegrown health-tech startup AMILI to pioneer a precision nutrition programme. Combining AMILI’s Asian-centric gut microbiome data with Google Cloud and Gemini AI technologies, the programme delivers personalised nutrition and lifestyle recommendations based on an individual’s microbiome patterns, metabolic health and goals. Further collaborations with healthcare clusters and agencies are being explored to scale the initiative nationally.

In addition, Google.org has committed US$1 million in funding to AISG’s Project Aquarium, an open data platform for Southeast Asian languages. The initiative aims to improve the quality and availability of regional datasets, making them open source to support the development of culturally relevant AI solutions.

Driving Innovation for Growth

To strengthen technical collaboration with enterprises, Google announced the launch of the Google Cloud Singapore Engineering Center. The new hub will house multidisciplinary software engineers and frontline support teams who will work directly with organisations tackling complex global challenges, particularly in emerging industries such as robotics and clean energy.

For startups, Google will introduce Startup School: Prompt to Prototype, the first programme of its kind in Southeast Asia. The online training programme will equip founders with tools such as Gemini and AI Studio, enabling them to build functional AI prototypes even without deep coding expertise.

Building a Future-Ready Workforce

Recognising the need to pair innovation with talent development, Google unveiled ‘Majulah AI’, a comprehensive initiative designed to equip Singaporeans with AI skills across all stages of life.

The programme integrates existing efforts such as Skills Ignition SG with the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) for jobseekers, Google for Startups Accelerator: AI First, AI Cloud Takeoff for developers, and Gemini Academy for the broader public, including seniors.

As part of this expansion, Google and IMDA will launch the Skills Ignition SG AI Challenge, a three-month accelerator programme targeting 500 graduates and mid-career professionals. The initiative focuses on interdisciplinary AI applications, training participants to integrate AI-powered workflows into non-technical roles such as Accountancy, Human Resources, Legal, and Sales & Marketing.

Participants will receive curriculum support shaped by IMDA, real-world insights from Institutes of Higher Learning and industry partners, as well as resume and interview coaching from Google teams. Top performers will have the opportunity to explore career openings within Google.

Creating a Secure AI Ecosystem

Google also announced measures to strengthen online safety and responsible AI development in Singapore.

A new AI Center of Excellence for security will be established locally to conduct research addressing emerging threats, including risks related to agentic AI, while advancing mobile security, privacy and content safety.

Google has also begun rolling out its age assurance solution in Singapore, providing safer digital experiences for users estimated to be under 18. Features include SafeSearch by default and enhanced content safeguards on YouTube and Google Play.

These efforts build on existing collaborations with government agencies, including enhanced fraud protection on Google Play Protect in partnership with the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (CSA). Over the past two years, the initiative has blocked more than 2.9 million high-risk app installation attempts across over 670,000 devices in Singapore.

Beyond technology safeguards, Google continues to promote digital literacy. Since 2022, its Be Internet Awesome programme, conducted in partnership with IMDA and the Media Literacy Council, has trained 210,000 parents and children on online safety, privacy protection and misinformation awareness, more than doubling its original target.
