To celebrate its 30th anniversary, the National Library Board (NLB) is giving away a record 60,000 pre-loved books at this year’s Big Book Giveaway (BBG), happening on 13 and 14 September 2025 at the Plaza of the National Library Building.
Now in its 10th year, the BBG continues NLB’s mission of extending the lifespan of books while spreading the joy of reading across the community. This year’s collection comes from older editions within NLB’s libraries, spanning genres like fantasy, science fiction, mystery, adult non-fiction, and children’s titles in multiple Mother Tongues. A special section will also highlight works about Singapore, tying in with the nation’s SG60 celebrations.
Unlike previous editions spread across branches, this year’s BBG will be held as a single large-scale event. Last year’s giveaway drew 6,000 participants, and with six times the number of books available this year, an even larger turnout is expected.
In the spirit of sustainability, visitors can also donate up to 50 books on either day of the event. Donations should exclude religious texts, textbooks, magazines, DVDs, CDs, AV materials, and damaged items. Beyond the BBG, NLB continues to donate pre-loved books to over 130 local and international partners, ensuring stories reach even more readers.
The Big Book Giveaway is part of Love Our Libraries & Archives (LOLA), a month-long initiative under NLB’s Libraries & Archives Blueprint 2025 (LAB25), which reimagines the role of libraries and archives in Singapore.
