Singapore’s Reading Culture Thrives: NLB Study Reveals Strong Habits Across All Ages

Reading is alive and well in Singapore, with a robust culture of literary engagement across generations, according to the National Library Board’s (NLB) 2024 National Reading Habits Study (NRHS). The triennial study found that nearly 9 in 10 adults and 8 in 10 teens in Singapore engage with reading materials—news, books, and online articles—several times a week.

While physical books remain a firm favorite, the study highlights a growing embrace of digital reading, especially among older adults who are increasingly turning to eBooks and discovering content through online platforms. This shift reflects the evolving preferences of a tech-savvy population, even as traditional formats continue to hold strong appeal.

Key Highlights from NRHS 2024

  • Book Engagement Rising: Nearly 80% of adults and 90% of teens read at least one book in the past year—an improvement from 2018, especially among adults.
  • Digital Formats Gain Ground: Though physical books account for nearly two-thirds of NLB’s loans, digital reading is steadily gaining traction, with older adults leading the trend.
  • Bookstores and Libraries Still Matter: Bookstores are the top destination for physical book purchases, followed closely by libraries. Over half of both adults (54%) and teens (62%) turn to bookstores first.
  • Purpose-Driven Reading: For most adults, reading is more functional than recreational, with over 90% citing benefits like improved critical thinking and expanded perspectives.

The 2021 edition of the NRHS, conducted mainly online due to the pandemic, is not directly comparable due to differing methodologies, but 2024 findings indicate that reading habits remain steady and strong.

NLB’s Strategy Forward: Fostering a Nation That Reads

In response to these insights, NLB plans to deepen its engagement strategies and make reading even more accessible and enjoyable:

  • Encouraging Reading for Pleasure: Recognizing that many read for function, NLB will focus on reigniting the joy of reading through interactive experiences and social connections.
  • Expanding Digital Access: With growing interest in digital formats, NLB will enhance its eBook offerings and e-learning tools through LAB25 initiatives, while expanding its digital Nodes across the island.
  • Elevating Library Spaces: Libraries will continue to evolve as discovery zones. NLB aims to create more tailored, immersive spaces to enhance browsing and cater to readers’ diverse interests.

Celebrating 30 Years of NLB: Major Events Ahead

To mark its 30th anniversary, NLB is rolling out its biggest-ever Read! Fest in July—READ30. Expect a sensory-rich marquee experience where stories come alive, a Presidential Pop-up Library showcasing books recommended by Singapore’s Presidents, and pop-up reading nodes stretching from Orchard Road to the National Library Building.

In September, the celebration continues with Love Our Libraries and Archives, a month-long event packed with community activities. Highlights include the return of the crowd-favorite Big Book Giveaway and a heartfelt letter-writing initiative to show appreciation for Singapore’s libraries and archives.
