Reading is alive and well in Singapore, with a robust culture of literary engagement across generations, according to the National Library Board’s (NLB) 2024 National Reading Habits Study (NRHS). The triennial study found that nearly 9 in 10 adults and 8 in 10 teens in Singapore engage with reading materials—news, books, and online articles—several times a week.
While physical books remain a firm favorite, the study highlights a growing embrace of digital reading, especially among older adults who are increasingly turning to eBooks and discovering content through online platforms. This shift reflects the evolving preferences of a tech-savvy population, even as traditional formats continue to hold strong appeal.
The 2021 edition of the NRHS, conducted mainly online due to the pandemic, is not directly comparable due to differing methodologies, but 2024 findings indicate that reading habits remain steady and strong.
In response to these insights, NLB plans to deepen its engagement strategies and make reading even more accessible and enjoyable:
To mark its 30th anniversary, NLB is rolling out its biggest-ever Read! Fest in July—READ30. Expect a sensory-rich marquee experience where stories come alive, a Presidential Pop-up Library showcasing books recommended by Singapore’s Presidents, and pop-up reading nodes stretching from Orchard Road to the National Library Building.
In September, the celebration continues with Love Our Libraries and Archives, a month-long event packed with community activities. Highlights include the return of the crowd-favorite Big Book Giveaway and a heartfelt letter-writing initiative to show appreciation for Singapore’s libraries and archives.
