UNESCO-Recognised Cambodian Dance and Art Take Centre Stage at Gardens by the Bay for SG60

In a vibrant tribute to 60 years of diplomatic ties between Singapore and Cambodia, Gardens by the Bay is hosting a two-day cultural showcase on June 20 and 21, featuring the Royal Ballet of Cambodia, a UNESCO-recognised art form, along with live demonstrations of traditional crafts and a commemorative photo exhibition.

Held in collaboration with the Royal Embassy of Cambodia in Singapore and as part of the SG60 celebrations, the event invites visitors to step into a world of rich heritage within the Flower Dome at Gardens by the Bay.

The Sovann Machha dance depicts a scene from the Cambodian epic Reamker, where Hanuman, the White Monkey, encounters and falls in love with Sovann Machha, the Golden Mermaid.

Opening Ceremony and Cultural Performances

The showcase was officially opened by Senior Parliamentary Secretary Eric Chua and His Excellency Sok Khoeun, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Cambodia to Singapore. Guests were treated to preview performances of Cambodia’s traditional dance and artisan demonstrations, including stone carving and lacquer painting.

Earlier in the day, SPS Chua also unveiled a new outdoor sculpture titled King Fighting with Lion at the Heritage Gardens. A replica of a relief found at Cambodia’s Bayon temple, the sculpture depicts the legendary King Jayavarman VII locked in battle with a lion, symbolising strength and resilience.

A Glimpse into Cambodia’s Living Heritage

Seven dancers from Cambodia’s Classical Dance Group will perform four signature dances:

  • Blessing Dance
  • Sovann Machha (Golden Mermaid Dance)
  • Tepthida Boung Suong Dance
  • Neary Kampuchea Dance

The first three are part of the Royal Ballet of Cambodia, a centuries-old tradition known for its stylised hand gestures, symbolic storytelling, and intricate costumes. These performances demand exceptional technical precision, flexibility, and artistic expression, reflecting Cambodia’s royal legacy.

Traditional Craftsmanship Comes to Life

In addition to the dance performances, master artisans from Artisans Angkor are showcasing two of Cambodia’s ancient crafts: stone carving and lacquer painting.

  • Stone Carving: Watch the Bayon face—an iconic image from Angkor’s Bayon temple—come to life in pink sandstone through meticulous hand-carving.
  • Lacquer Painting: Discover the detailed process of creating layered resin artwork, as artisans present motifs such as the Hand Apsara, representing the cycle of life and learning, and the Sokrip, depicting the Monkey King from the Reamker, Cambodia’s version of the Ramayana.

Celebrating Six Decades of Friendship

Rounding out the showcase is a photo exhibition highlighting the strong and evolving ties between Singapore and Cambodia over the past 60 years, offering a visual journey through shared milestones, cultural exchanges, and mutual growth.
