This August, Singapore’s pioneering musical theatre company The Theatre Practice makes a dazzling return with Partial Eclipse Of The Heart — a brand-new Mandarin jukebox musical set to reignite your love for friendship, nostalgia, and Mandopop.
Running from 21 August to 7 September 2025, this original production stars a stellar cast including Joanna Dong, Derrick Hoh, Ric Liu, Jean Seizure, and Chriz Tong. The story follows five lifelong friends who reunite every decade at the same seaside chalet to catch a solar eclipse — a ritual from their astronomy club youth. From impulsive teenagers to adults balancing love, careers, and families, their shared tradition becomes a poignant lens through which life’s changes unfold.
Spanning four decades, Partial Eclipse Of The Heart blends heartfelt storytelling with a playlist of beloved Mandopop hits, promising laughter, tears, and moments that’ll have audiences quietly singing along.
Directed by Kuo Jian Hong (Artistic Director of Practice and award-winning musical veteran), the musical marks Practice’s first original musical since 2012’s Lao Jiu: The Musical, and its first jukebox musical since the sold-out If There’re Seasons….
It also carries emotional weight as the final work of acclaimed playwright Jonathan Lim, who passed away earlier this year. Lim’s original drafts were completed by Kuo and Practice Associate Artist Ng Mun Poh, with a new original song crafted by lyricist Xiaohan and composer Julian Wong.
Making their musical theatre debuts are Jean Seizure as Connie, an architect navigating life on her own terms, and Derrick Hoh as Zhi Hao, a carefree pilot forced to confront his past. Joining them are seasoned stage stars Ric Liu and Chriz Tong as civil servants YQ and Jia Xuan, whose seemingly perfect lives begin to unravel. Joanna Dong plays Yu Ning, a former misfit turned glamorous TV star. A dynamic supporting cast, including Marcus Elliot Cheong, Isabella Chiam, Hang Qian Chou, Vanessa Kee, and Seah Janice, round out the ensemble.
Through humour, heartbreak, and harmony, Partial Eclipse Of The Heart explores the beauty of friendship that endures — even when life pulls people in different directions.
