[Review] Sony WH-CH720N Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones: Mid-range Stylish Sound with All-Day Comfort

There are so many new audio brands out there making earbuds and headphones that we tend to forget that Sony used to the OG of portable music with their iconic Sony Walkman.

Sony continues to ship decent audio accessories to date.

Sony’s WH-CH720N Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones is one such, delivering a compelling mix of comfort, performance, and affordability, punching above its weight in the mid-range segment.

Weighing just 192 grams, the WH-CH720N is Sony’s lightest over-ear noise-cancelling model to date.

The headphones feature a minimalist design with a matte plastic finish and faux leather padding on the earcups and headband, ensuring comfort during extended listening sessions. While the earcups swivel to lay flat, note that the headphones do not fold, and a carrying case is not included, which may affect portability. Not a biggie for us, but would be so for those looking for something compact.

Equipped with 30mm dynamic drivers, the WH-CH720N delivers clear mids and highs, with a bass response that is clean and satisfying for its price range. The headphones support Sony’s Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE) and 360 Reality Audio, providing an immersive listening experience. For the more discerning audiophiles, you can further customise sound profiles using the Sony Headphones Connect app.

The WH-CH720N utilises Dual Noise Sensor technology and Sony’s Integrated Processor V1 to offer effective noise cancellation, particularly for consistent low-frequency sounds like engine hum. The Ambient Sound mode allows users to stay aware of their surroundings, with adjustable levels and a voice passthrough option for conversations without removing the headphones.

Battery performance is a strong suit, offering up to 35 hours of playback with noise cancellation enabled and up to 50 hours without. A quick 3-minute charge provides approximately 60 minutes of playback. The headphones support Bluetooth 5.2 with multipoint connectivity, allowing simultaneous pairing with two devices. They also include a 3.5mm audio jack for wired listening.

Overall, the Sony WH-CH720N is a well-rounded choice delivering quality noise cancellation, long battery life, and comfort at an affordable price point. Its stylish design and feature set make it a strong contender in the mid-range headphone market.
