Violet Oon Singapore at Dempsey Opens: A Grand Celebration of Peranakan Heritage and Culinary Artistry

Violet Oon Singapore has officially opened its doors at Dempsey, unveiling its first standalone restaurant in one of Singapore’s most iconic lifestyle enclaves. This stunning new flagship marks a significant milestone for the celebrated brand, offering a refined dining experience that beautifully blends Peranakan heritage with modern elegance.

Spanning over 6,000 square feet across a main floor and mezzanine, the Dempsey location features an opulent main dining room, two elegant private rooms, and a lush alfresco veranda that’s pet-friendly — all set within a restored heritage building. Signature black, gold, and emerald hues are paired with antique Nyonya tiles collected from historic homes, evoking a space steeped in culture and warmth.

The refreshed menu is a heartfelt tribute to Singapore’s rich culinary roots. Led by Violet Oon herself, it showcases time-honoured Peranakan recipes — from fiery sambals to comforting braised dishes. Beloved classics such as Buah Keluak Ayam and Chap Chye are joined by rare heirloom gems like Nasi Ulam, a vibrant herb rice salad, and Hati Babi Bungkus, a delicately wrapped pork liver dish once reserved for grand feasts. Seasonal specials like Kerabu Pucuk Paku and Sambal Belimbing Udang, using ingredients from the in-house edible garden, spotlight native herbs and fruits in full glory.

Complementing the cuisine is a thoughtfully curated drinks programme. Guests can sip on cocktails inspired by local ingredients — from the tart and layered Rindu Roselle to the nostalgic Ong Lai and bold, zero-proof Swee Chilli. Every beverage, whether spirited or alcohol-free, is crafted to harmonise with the menu and reflect Singapore’s cultural richness.

Beyond the plate, the restaurant offers a sensory journey. Guests are invited to explore the edible garden brimming with torch ginger, blue pea flower, wild betel, and jackfruit — ingredients that bring Singapore’s biodiversity and culinary soul to life.

The décor, meanwhile, is a visual ode to the Peranakan spirit — from heritage chandeliers to intimate tiled ceilings. Whether dining under the stars on the veranda or enjoying a private celebration in the mezzanine lounge, the space can host up to 134 guests in a variety of elegant settings.

For Violet Oon, Dempsey holds deep personal significance. It was here, in 1976, that she was invited by Dr. Goh Keng Swee to lead the SAF Music and Drama Company — a chapter that adds emotional depth to this new venture nestled in a former army camp turned cultural haven.
