Starbucks Opens Heritage-Inspired Flagship Store in Chinatown

Starbucks Singapore has officially opened its latest flagship store at 37 Smith Street, right in the heart of Chinatown—just a three-minute walk from the MRT station. This two-storey store marks a historic milestone as the first Starbucks in Singapore to be housed within a restored heritage shophouse, blending the charm of local tradition with the familiar warmth of the global coffee brand.

Mayor for Central CDC, Denise Phua, officiating the grand opening as the Guest-of-Honour

Stepping into the store, visitors are welcomed by a striking “星巴克” (Starbucks) signboard—an intricate collaboration between Calligraphy Master Yong Cheong Thye and Wood Carving Master Cheh Kai Hon. Their handcrafted masterpiece combines Chinese calligraphy with woodwork and traditional plaster moulding, a first-of-its-kind artistic treatment for a Starbucks store in Singapore.

Inside, the space is a harmonious mix of old and new, with thoughtfully curated design details that reflect Chinese culture. From traditional motifs and murals by Singaporean artist Tiffany Lovage to contemporary furnishings and a youthful color palette, the store is designed to be both a cozy retreat and a vibrant gathering spot.

A highlight of this new Starbucks experience is a dedicated retail zone featuring exclusive merchandise, including a collaboration with local calligraphy artist JunleFont. Visitors will also find a life-sized Merlion Bearista on-site—perfect for photo ops and a whimsical nod to Singapore’s iconic symbol.

Beyond coffee, the store plays a key role in Chinatown’s ongoing rejuvenation. As the anchor tenant in this historic block, Starbucks 37 Smith Street contributes to the area’s transformation into a dynamic hub where culture, creativity, and community converge.

Sip into Singapore’s Soul with Exclusive Local Beverages

Two handcrafted blended beverages take center stage, offering nostalgic flavours with a modern twist. The Black Sesame Oatmilk Coffee Frappuccino with Soy Pudding ($9.90) reimagines the traditional black sesame dessert with coffee, oatmilk, and creamy soy pudding, topped with whipped cream—a decadent tribute to local indulgence.

For those craving the best of both worlds, the Yuan Yang Coffee Frappuccino ($9.90) blends coffee, hojicha, milk, and chocolate chips for a comforting yet bold drink.

Both drinks are available exclusively at the Smith Street store and via Mobile Order & Pay.

A Taste of Home: Starbucks x Old Seng Choong

In collaboration with heritage bakery Old Seng Choong, Starbucks presents a collection of seven new locally inspired treats—alongside the return of three fan favourites. Expect everything from buttery pastries to nostalgic cakes like:

  • XL Chicken Char Siew Puff ($6.00)
  • Starbucks Coffee Bolo Bun with Butter ($4.90)
  • Java Chip Frappuccino Swiss Roll ($7.20)
  • Pandan Chiffon Cake (Sliced $3.90 | Whole $22.80)

Fans of sweet-meets-savory won’t want to miss the return of comforting classics like the Laksa Mac & Cheese Pie, Nonya Chicken Curry Prata Pie, and the breakfast favorite Chicken Luncheon, Tamago & Brioche Bun—now available at all stores.

Honouring Local Talent: Starbucks + JunLeFont

A standout highlight of the Smith Street experience is the exclusive Starbucks + JunLeFont collection, featuring the calligraphy of Singaporean artist Lee Jun Le (Lele), who lives with autism. His unique font, born from his daily ritual of copying the Heart Sutra, now graces a range of beautiful lifestyle items including mugs, tumblers, a tote bag, pouch, and a chopsticks set. Each piece, infused with the character “樂” (joy), captures Lele’s artistic journey and celebrates imperfection, expression, and cultural heritage.

Available in phases at 37 Smith Street:

  • 7 April: Tumblers
  • 11 April: Mugs
  • 25 April: Tote Bag, Pouch, Chopsticks Set

Nostalgic Vibes: Starbucks + WHENIWASFOUR Collection

In another design-forward collaboration, Starbucks teams up with beloved local studio WHENIWASFOUR to launch the Local Destination collection—a series of drinkware and lifestyle items inspired by iconic Singaporean visuals. Think bold prints, heritage symbols, and vibrant city vibes packed into mugs, bottles, and totes.

This limited-edition release is rolling out in waves:

Embracing Culture: Lion Dance Series & Samsui Bearista Keychain

As part of the store’s grand opening festivities, Starbucks debuts its exclusive Lion Dance Series—a vibrant celebration of prosperity featuring culturally inspired drinkware and collectibles. Fans can also snag the charming Samsui Bearista Plush Keychain, a tribute to the iconic Samsui women, complete with traditional attire and mini clog charm.
