The recently launched OPPO Find N5 emerges as a surprising groundbreaking entrant in the foldable smartphone market, setting new benchmarks in design, performance, and functionality.
The headliner – it has claimed the title for the world’s slimmest foldable, trimming approximately half a millimetre from the previous record holder, Honor’s Magic V3. On top of this, it is also packed with all the necessary camera fundamentals, juiced-up hardware performances and snazzy new AI features to boost.
After using the Find N5 for a couple of weeks, the question lingers in my mind – what is next for the next level of smartphone innovation after this for the foldable segment?
One of the most striking features of the Find N5 is its unprecedented thinness.
Not just that, it is also extremely light-weight and barely thicker or heavier than most other flagship smartphone models that are not even foldable!
I have been a hold-out for foldable smartphones due to the chunky size and weight, but the Find N5 has changed my perception. Now, it has become my defacto Android phone of choice (I always carry two mobile phones on two SIM plans, an Apple and an Android phone).
When folded, it measures just 8.93mm, and when unfolded, a mere 4.21mm, making it the slimmest foldable phone to date. This engineering marvel does not compromise on durability; the device feels robust and well-constructed, thanks to its titanium alloy hinge and high-strength aluminum frame.
The hinge mechanism is particularly noteworthy, offering a smooth folding experience with minimal visible crease on the inner display. Beautiful.
The Find N5 boasts a 6.62-inch outer AMOLED screen with a resolution of 1140×2616 pixels and an adaptive refresh rate ranging from 1Hz to 120Hz.
The inner foldable display expands to 8.12 inches, offering a resolution of 2248×2480 pixels and similar adaptive refresh rates. Both screens deliver vibrant colours and sharp visuals, enhanced by high-frequency PWM dimming to reduce eye strain.
The incorporation of Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG) and Nano-Crystal Glass ensures durability and a premium touch experience.
Under the hood, the Find N5 is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, coupled with 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 512GB of UFS 4.0 storage. This configuration ensures seamless multitasking and swift app performance.
The device runs on Android 15 with OPPO’s ColorOS 15 overlay, introducing features like enhanced multitasking, AI-powered search, and improved cross-device functionality with O+ Connect, enabling seamless integration with Mac devices.
The latter is a Godsend as I often encounter a lot of hassle when transferring photos, videos and other files from my Android devices to my Mac.
Once set up, the O+ Connect enables remote control of your Mac. The phone transforms into a mini laptop, with the Mac display mirrored on the top half and either a keyboard or a virtual trackpad on the bottom. While the phone and Mac do not need to be on the same network, the Mac must be online and awake to establish the connection.
On the software front, OPPO earned well-deserved praise for its innovative split-screen feature when it introduced the Find N3. The main screen can accommodate up to three apps simultaneously, either equally sharing the space or with one sliding off the edge, ready to be brought back with a tap. It remains the most effective method for utilising a large touchscreen, and OPPO has wisely kept it largely unchanged. A notable update is a more streamlined activation process, now accessible through a three-dot menu in the notification bar.
The camera setup is versatile, featuring a 50MP main sensor with Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS), a 50MP periscope telephoto lens supporting 6x optical zoom, and an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera with a 116° field of view.
Co-engineered with Hasselblad, the camera system delivers rich colors and sharp details. Both the cover screen and the main foldable display house an 8MP selfie camera, supporting up to 4K video recording.
Below are some test shots I took with the camera:
So far so good and I enjoyed photography with the Find N5, delivering at the level that one would expect from any flagship smartphone model.
Equipped with a 5,600mAh battery utilising advanced silicon-carbon technology, the Find N5 offers extended usage while maintaining a slim profile.
One of the complaints about the previous Find N3 was the absence of wireless charging. That issue has now been resolved with support for 50W wireless charging.
It supports 80W SuperVOOC wired charging, achieving a full charge in approximately 42 minutes, along with 50W wireless and 10W reverse wireless charging capabilities.
The Find N5 sets a new standard in durability with certifications for water resistance, including IPX6, IPX8, and IPX9 ratings, offering strong protection against splashes and submersion.
Considering that the Find N5 comes with just a flimsy, slim phone cover, I can testify to its durability as I have dropped it from chest level on the floor several times and it survived with nary a scratch.
The device also includes stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, and USB Type-C audio for enhanced connectivity. An alert slider allows for quick sound profile adjustments, further improving usability.
The OPPO Find N5’s sleek design, powerful performance, quality camera system, and robust durability features make it a compelling choice for users seeking cutting-edge technology. While the premium price point reflects its flagship status, the Find N5 offers a comprehensive package that justifies the investment.
For me, I enjoy reading news and watching videos on the Find N5 due to its larger screen and ease of use, switching between single screen to duo screen mode. I will find it hard to switch back to a regular single screen phone from now on for my second mobile device.
The OPPO Find N5 is available in Singapore in Misty White and Cosmic Black color options.
It is priced at S$2,499 for the 16GB RAM and 512GB storage variant and is now available in the market in Singapore.
