Somerset Reset: Youths Take the Lead in Transforming Somerset Belt

The Somerset Belt is set for a dynamic transformation, with its redevelopment targeted for completion by 2027. Spearheading this evolution is Somerset Reset, a six-month engagement campaign inviting youths to shape the future of this iconic precinct. Launched today, Somerset Reset offers young Singaporeans the opportunity to work alongside architects, planners, and government agencies to bring their creative vision to life.

A Precinct Designed by Youths, for Youths

Since its inception, the Somerset Belt transformation has been driven by youth engagement. Prior to COVID-19, over 9,000 youths contributed ideas that culminated in the Somerset Belt Masterplan, a blueprint for a vibrant, multi-faceted space that reflects the aspirations, creativity, and diverse talents of Singapore’s youth. The Masterplan envisions Somerset Belt as:

  1. A multi-dimensional hub for varied activities.
  2. A canvas for creative expression.
  3. A welcoming and explorative environment.
  4. A space that is dynamic and ever-evolving.
  5. A gathering place for community and self-discovery.
  6. A precinct powered by community partnerships.

Key transformation sites include a revitalized *SCAPE, an expanded Skate Park, a green contemplative space, and a youth park fostering artistic expression and entrepreneurship.

Turning Vision into Reality

With *SCAPE’s upgrading nearing completion by year-end, the broader Somerset Belt redevelopment is set to commence in the first half of 2026. Somerset Reset marks a new phase, where youths will actively co-design and co-create the space, from site layout to programming and activities.

To kickstart this initiative, 30 youth leaders will participate in a series of three hands-on workshops with precinct planners, *SCAPE representatives, and government agencies. The first session, an overnight camp at *SCAPE, includes brainstorming sessions, interactive discussions, and a guided night tour to help participants gain deeper insights into the project’s potential.

Subsequent workshops will introduce an immersive sandbox environment in the Roblox Metaverse, allowing youths to visualize their ideas in a simulated setting, test feasibility, and refine their designs. Beyond workshops, participants will specialize in different aspects of the Somerset Belt project and engage wider youth networks to ensure the transformation aligns with community aspirations.

Engaging the Wider Community

In the coming months, the public can anticipate interactive roadshows showcasing selected design concepts, along with youth-led activities and events aimed at gathering feedback. These initiatives will ensure the redevelopment remains an inclusive and representative effort.
