Gardens by the Bay Welcomes the Year with Majestic Floral Display Featuring Madam White Snake

Gardens by the Bay has unveiled its stunning Chinese New Year floral display, Spring Blossoms (春花盛开之白蛇传), inspired by the legendary tale of Madam White Snake. At the heart of this enchanting exhibit is a breathtaking 4.5m-tall, 26m-long living sculpture of Madam White Snake, crafted from over 23,000 plants like moth orchids, kalanchoes, and cyclamens.

Unveiled by Minister for Health Mr. Ong Ye Kung and other dignitaries, the floral display runs at the Flower Dome until 23 February 2025. Visitors can marvel at the intricate artistry of mosaiculture, a sophisticated horticultural technique that transforms plants into spectacular living sculptures.

Bringing the Legend to Life

The display draws inspiration from one of China’s greatest folk tales, which narrates the love story between Xu Xian, a mortal man, and Bai Suzhen, the snake spirit known as Madam White Snake. Key highlights include:

  • Madam White Snake’s Sculpture: Painstakingly assembled by horticulturists from Gardens by the Bay and Beijing Florascape.
  • Green Snake Xiaoqing and Jixian Pavilion: Mosaiculture elements evoking Hangzhou’s iconic West Lake.
  • Leifeng Pagoda Replica: A 7m-tall representation of where Madam White Snake was imprisoned, featuring historic pagoda models from the Asian Civilisations Museum.

A Celebration of Prosperity and New Beginnings

Spring Blossoms also showcases over 1,000 dahlias, including five new varieties grown in-house, symbolizing prosperity and fresh starts. Standouts include the Dahlia Buga Munchen 2005, with magenta-pink starburst petals, and the Dahlia Maldini, known for its deep pink blooms with delicate white tips.

Complementing the display is a zodiac snake sculpture honoring the Year of the Snake and elegant paper umbrellas, nodding to the fateful meeting of Xu Xian and Madam White Snake.

Exclusive Events and Offerings

  • Spring Couplets: Calligraphers from Peking University will create couplets for visitors on 18 and 19 January from 10am to 11:30am.
  • River Hongbao 2025: Returning from 27 January to 5 February, this outdoor celebration features vibrant lanterns, carnival games, firecrackers, and a poignant exhibition on remittance letters from early Chinese migrants.

A Record Year Ahead

Gardens by the Bay is celebrating a milestone, welcoming 14.5 million visitors in 2024. To mark Singapore’s SG60 celebrations, the Flower Dome will host a record nine floral displays in 2025, including the much-anticipated Sakura exhibit in March.

Spring Blossoms: Legend of Lady White Snake
