[Concert Review] The Night of Star Voices 2024 – A Nostalgic Evening of Mandopop Icons

Held at Resorts World Sentosa’s grand ballroom last evening, The Night of Star Voices was an event packed with nostalgia, emotive ballads, and powerhouse performances. Headlined by four Asian music legends – Jess Lee, Z-Chen, Tiger Huang, and Eric Moo – the concert offered a diverse array of musical styles and unforgettable moments for the audience.

I am a fan of Tiger Huang and Eric Moo for their singing prowess and was looking forward to an evening of entertainment with the two industry veterans. They did not disappoint.

The night kicked off with Jess Lee, who impressed the audience with her vocal versatility and emotional depth.

Opening with her fiery track 大火 (Burn), Jess brought an electrifying energy to the stage. Her soulful duet in a surprise performance featuring her sister on 有一種悲傷 (A Kind of Sorrow), left the crowd in awe, elevating the evening with a tender and heartfelt performance.

She closed her set with 煎熬 (Suffering), her best-known song that once again showcased her vocal power and cemented her place as one of the most formidable singers in the Chinese music industry.

Z-chen fulfilled his filler role during the concert by delivering a passable performance

Z-Chen, with his R&B flair, provided a contrast to the night’s ballad-heavy performances. Opening with 詩人 (Poet), his set had potential to add variety to the concert. Unfortunately, Z-Chen’s performance fell short of expectations, with several moments where he appeared to miss lyrics.

While there were indications he was trying to engage the audience by encouraging sing-alongs, this approach did not seem to land well, leaving his segment feeling a bit like filler amidst the stronger performances of the night.

Tiger Huang, affectionately known as the “Queen of Pubs,” was one of the night’s clear standouts.

Full of charm and wit, she not only delivered powerful renditions of fan favourites like the more recent hit, 沒那麼簡單 (More Difficult Than It Seems), but also connected deeply with the audience. Her self-deprecating humour, especially when she joked about her short top revealing her belly, had the audience laughing and enjoying the relaxed atmosphere she created. Tiger’s rapport with her fans made her set both fun and memorable.

The evening’s finale belonged to the veteran, Eric Moo. From the moment he stepped on stage, it was as though time stood still, as his energy and commanding presence captivated the entire ballroom.

Opening with his classic, 特别的爱给特别的你 (A Special Love for a Special You), Eric delivered hit after hit with unmatched intensity. His seamless transitions through beloved classics like 等你等到我心痛 (Waiting for You Until My Heart Aches) and 太傻 (Foolish Heart) had the crowd fully engaged.

He ended his set with a medley of the most iconic Mandopop karaoke favourites, ensuring that everyone in the hall was on their feet, waving along and singing in unison. His performance left no doubt that he remains a dominant force in the music industry even after decades.

Overall, The Night of Star Voices 2024 was a celebration of timeless Mandopop, with a few minor dips in energy but plenty of highlights that will be remembered by fans for a long time to come.

For concertgoers seeking nostalgia and vocal excellence, this event delivered exactly that. Expect more concerts to come at Resorts World Sentosa, among other slew of entertainment offerings they have lined up.
