Unicaja Malaga Triumphs in Singapore to Win FIBA Intercontinental Cup

Unicaja Malaga claimed their first-ever FIBA Intercontinental Cup title after a decisive 75-60 victory over NBA G League United in the 2024 final held at Singapore Indoor Stadium. This historic win adds to Europe’s impressive record in the competition, bringing their total trophy count to 23, with Spanish clubs securing 11 of those.

Representing Europe as the reigning Basketball Champions League winners, Unicaja took an early lead and maintained control throughout, holding a six-point advantage at halftime. Their defense proved impenetrable in the second half, extending their lead to 21 points in the final quarter. Dylan Osetkowski, named MVP of the tournament, led the team with 15 points, continuing his stellar performance throughout the competition.

Tasmania JackJumpers Secure Third Place

The Tasmania JackJumpers made an impressive debut in the tournament, clinching third place after a hard-fought 80-75 win over Al Riyadi Beirut. Down by seven points heading into the fourth quarter, the JackJumpers rallied, with Anthony Drmic’s clutch three-pointer sealing the victory. Will Magnay was the standout performer with 19 points and seven rebounds, while Majok Deng added 13 points off the bench.

Despite the loss, Al Riyadi Beirut showcased their competitive edge, narrowly missing out on back-to-back third-place finishes.

Petro de Luanda’s Historic Win

Earlier in the day, Petro de Luanda of Angola claimed fifth place in a thrilling 70-64 victory over Argentina’s Quimsa. Solo Diabate’s clutch jumper in the final moments secured the win, marking the first victory by an African team in the FIBA Intercontinental Cup. Abou Gakou led the Angolan team with 20 points, while Patrick Gardner contributed a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

The 2024 FIBA Intercontinental Cup was a milestone event, expanding its global reach by including teams from all six continents for the first time. Unicaja’s victory and the growing participation from regions like Asia and Oceania highlight the competition’s evolution into a truly global basketball showcase.
