We recently went on a 5D4N trip to explore South Thailand, flying to Hat Yai via AirAsia and traveling to Trang and Phatthalung from there and back.
After covering the highlights in Hat Yai, consider venturing further into the beautiful provinces of Trang and Phatthalung for a longer vacation in South Thailand. With stunning landscapes, cultural attractions, and island adventures, the region has a lot more to offer beyond just shopping and eating in the city.
Here are 12 recommended places to visit which we covered and experienced during our trip.
Address. Moo 1 Khuan Khanun-Thale Noi Road Phanang Tung Khuan Khanun Phatthalung 93150
Just a 1.5-hour drive from Hat Yai, Thale Noi Wetlands is a vast protected area that is perfect for nature lovers. It is one of Thailand’s largest freshwater lakes, known for its diverse bird species and stunning sunrise views. A morning boat ride through the wetlands is highly recommended and is a serene way to start your exploration of Phatthalung.
Thale Noi, meaning “Little Sea,” spans over 460 square kilometres and offers a unique blend of breathtaking scenery, abundant wildlife, and rich cultural heritage. The lake is home to a vast array of migratory birds, lotus-filled wetlands, and traditional fishing communities, making it an idyllic escape for those looking to immerse themselves in South Thailand’s natural beauty.
The area around the jetty is peppered with many local stores touting local snacks and dried products like salted fish. We tried the fried fish roe there which is a nice little treat worth trying. Do try it too if you are game for some local flavours.

Material such as tree bark, yellow ginger and mangosteen leaves are used as the natural dye or the instruments used to produce the tie-dye fabric. Everything used in the production is natural and sustainable and the craftspeople are all recruited from the local village to support a cottage enterprise model.
A visit to the village is an interesting way to engage with local culture, interact with the local community and also take home an artisanal handcrafted souvenir to support their works.

Stay at Kachong Hills Tented Resort in Trang for a mix of rustic charm and modern comfort. The resort offers a variety of accommodations, from glamping tents to luxury rooms with mountain views.
Our stay at this hidden gem began with a night in the Exclusive Explorer Tent, a cosy, nature-immersed experience that truly allows you to disconnect from the hustle of daily life. This is as good as it gets for a glamping experience, complete with a panoramic view of the forested area through the full glass windows. There is even an outdoor bathtub for us to take a dip while appreciating the sights and sounds of the natural surroundings.
The following night, we transitioned to the Mountain View Deluxe Room, where we enjoyed a more contemporary and luxurious stay, complete with stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
In the resort, engage in activities like tea-tasting sessions or enjoy a private dining experience at the Looklom Restaurant, which serves delicious Southern Thai cuisine.
Mornings at Kachong Hills are a treat, with a delightful breakfast spread featuring both Thai and international cuisines, served in the on-site Luk Lom Restaurant.
The resorts house several house farm animals, including a trio of friendly sheep that are accustomed to humans. Guests will have fun interacting with them over breakfast or while exploring the resort.

Trang is a gateway to some of Thailand’s most beautiful islands. Ko Kradan, named the most beautiful beach in 2023 by the British World Beach Guide, offers pristine white sands, clear turquoise waters, and vibrant coral reefs, making it perfect for snorkeling and relaxation.
To explore the area, hire a boat for a day tour of island hopping and sea adventures.
From Ko Kradan, continue to Ko Muk by boat to explore the famous Emerald Cave, a hidden lagoon accessed through a sea cave. It was quite a sight watching the water geyser spraying out from the cave entrance/exit.
Back at the jetty, several local restaurants serve delicious fresh seafood dishes by the beach. It would be good way to end the day with a sumptuous dinner by the sea.
