[Movie Review] Deadpool & Wolverine (2024): A Chaotic, Hilarious, and Heartfelt Marvel Mashup, Packed Full of Nostalgia

Deadpool & Wolverine is the latest Marvel film that throws two of its most beloved anti-heroes into a cinematic blender, resulting in a mix that is as chaotic as it is entertaining. Given the recent string of meh releases from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), I did not have high hopes for the movie when I headed for the preview screening, but was so glad to be proven wrong.

Directed by Shawn Levy, the film follows Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) on a wild, multiverse-spanning adventure that fans in Singapore are sure to find both hilarious and surprisingly heartfelt.

Right from the start, the movie sets itself apart with its signature blend of sharp, self-aware humour. Deadpool’s wisecracks and Wolverine’s grumpy comebacks create a dynamic that feels fresh, even in a genre that is often oversaturated with superhero team-ups.

The humour is distinctly meta, breaking the fourth wall and poking fun not just at the MCU, but at Hollywood itself. It is the kind of cheeky, irreverent humour that resonates well with counterculture comic book fans who enjoy a good laugh at the expense of big, glossy franchises. However, some jokes are so specific to American pop culture and behind-the-scenes Hollywood antics that they might fly over the heads of those who are not as plugged into that world. We would readily admit that we did not get all the jokes, but we believe most Singaporeans can still get by and enjoy the movie immensely without getting every single little reference.

The action sequences in Deadpool & Wolverine are nothing short of spectacular.

At 55 years of age, Hugh Jackman’s extremely toned body still oozes sex appeal and is eye candy for his fans. Wolverine’s brutal combat style is on full display, capturing his comic book essence and delivering some of the best action scenes seen in the MCU to date. The fight choreography is intense and imaginative, and Shawn Levy does an excellent job keeping these scenes engaging without becoming overwhelming.

For those who love a good action-packed film, this movie is guaranteed to satisfy, providing the kind of visceral thrill that makes for a great weekend movie outing for army boys to build camaraderie.

Beyond the laughs and the mayhem, the film also touches on deeper themes of redemption and second chances.

Both Deadpool and Wolverine are depicted as flawed characters haunted by their pasts, and their journey together becomes a narrative of personal growth and healing. This unexpected layer of emotional depth is something that might surprise viewers, adding substance to a film that could have easily relied solely on humour and action. The chemistry between Reynolds and Jackman is undeniable, with both actors delivering performances that are as touching as they are entertaining. It is a reminder that even in a superhero movie, there can be moments that resonate on a deeper, more personal level.

Overall, Deadpool & Wolverine is a fun and unique addition to the MCU, offering something a bit different from the usual superhero fare like the earlier two Deadpool movies. It is a film that does not take itself too seriously, yet manages to deliver both laughs and heartfelt moments. If you are looking for an entertaining escape, this movie is worth a watch. Whether you are a fan of Deadpool’s irreverent humour or Wolverine’s tough-guy persona, there is something here for everyone.

Deadpool & Wolverine is rated M18 in Singapore and is now screening in cinemas here.
