The Banyan Tree Group is thrilled to announce the opening of its first property in Japan, Banyan Tree Higashiyama Kyoto, in the third quarter of 2024. Situated in the historic Higashiyama Ward of Kyoto City, this luxurious retreat will feature 52 exquisite guestrooms, the signature Banyan Tree Spa, and two unique dining experiences.
Nestled on the esteemed site of the former Hotel Ryozen, Banyan Tree Higashiyama Kyoto sits in the heart of Kyoto’s renowned Higashiyama district. This area is famed for its cultural landmarks, including Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Kodai-ji Temple. The property is graced with the rare Higashiyama Onsen hot spring, enhancing its appeal as a cherished retreat. This redevelopment underscores Banyan Tree Group’s dedication to preserving cultural heritage and promoting sustainability for future generations.
The sacred Ryozen area within the Higashiyama mountains has long symbolized the boundary between the earthly and the spiritual realms, flanked by the Otani Sobyo Mausoleum to the north and Toribeno to the south. Here, Nohgaku, a traditional Japanese performing art with themes of the supernatural, has been performed for around 650 years since the Muromachi period and was designated a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2008.
In a unique homage to this tradition, Banyan Tree Higashiyama Kyoto boasts a Noh stage designed by renowned architect Kengo Kuma—the only one of its kind in a Kyoto hotel. This elegant stage, seamlessly blending with the natural surroundings of Higashiyama, will host traditional Nohgaku performances, contemporary art, and musical events, offering guests an unforgettable cultural experience.
The 52 guestrooms, designed by Yukio Hashimoto, draw inspiration from the concept of “yūgen” (mysterious, quiet beauty) and the famous Noh phrase “Hisureba Hana” (hidden beauty revealed). Each room features traditional Japanese materials such as large cypress wood bathtubs, tatami mats, natural wood elements, and gold leaf accents. These elements aim to engage all five senses, providing guests with a serene and immersive experience that goes beyond their imagination.
Banyan Tree Higashiyama Kyoto harmonizes with its natural surroundings through three distinctive gardens and a bamboo grove. The hotel’s sustainable practices include preserving and reinforcing historic stone walls from the Hotel Ryozen, cultivating moss for these walls during construction, and maintaining existing symbolic trees and the bamboo grove.
The award-winning Banyan Tree Spa will offer Kyoto-specific treatments, promising guests unique ways to relax and explore. Additionally, two unique dining experiences will highlight the rich culinary heritage of Kyoto, further enhancing the guest experience.
A special ‘Opening Offer’ is available for stays starting from July 26, 2024, inviting guests to be among the first to experience this exceptional retreat.
