The allure of Australia’s stunning landscapes is capturing the imagination of travelers, thanks to the influence of blockbuster films. According to Expedia, nearly 30% of travelers are choosing their holiday destinations based on locations seen in movies, a phenomenon known as set-jetting. Kate Marks, CEO of Ausfilm, states that 2024 is shaping up to be a banner year for Australia in film, with major productions like “Mad Max: Furiosa” and “The Fall Guy” putting the country’s iconic scenery in the spotlight.
Sydney, or Warrane, takes a starring role in “The Fall Guy,” seamlessly blending into the film’s narrative. The production utilized some of the city’s most iconic landmarks, including the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. In a move away from digital effects, the crew closed the Harbour Bridge to film an exhilarating high-speed car chase, with Ryan Gosling performing many of his own stunts. The actor even obtained a New South Wales boating license for a scene featuring an 80-foot boat jump, handled by the stunt team for safety.
Sydney Harbour Bridge: To capture the high-octane car scene, the entire bridge was closed. Visitors can experience this landmark by climbing it with Burrawa Bridge Climb or taking a scenic tour underneath with Tribal Warrior Tours.
Bligh Street & Uptown Sydney: Home to thrilling scenes from the film, this area is a hotspot for food, wine, art, and culture. Enjoy a performance at the Sydney Opera House, then explore Circular Quay’s vibrant bar scene, with spots like Maybe Sammy and The Caterpillar Club.
Kurnell & Narrabeen Beach: These coastal areas offer beautiful walks and iconic surfing spots. The Burrawang Walk in Kurnell and the relaxing Narrabeen Beach are perfect for soaking in the film’s coastal settings.
The “Mad Max” franchise has long highlighted Australia’s spectacular outback, and “Furiosa” continues this tradition. Set to be the biggest production ever filmed in New South Wales, this standalone action adventure delves into the origins of the powerhouse character from “Mad Max: Fury Road.” The film’s score prominently features the Indigenous Australian didgeridoo, adding a unique cultural element.
Hay, New South Wales: The small town of Hay, with its vast plains and stunning vistas, served as a key filming location. Known as one of the flattest places on Earth, the Hay Plains offer a 360-degree view of the outback, perfect for experiencing the film’s dramatic landscapes.
Coober Pedy, South Australia: Famous for its lunar landscape and opal mines, Coober Pedy is a must-visit for fans. Stay at Crocodile Harry’s Underground Nest & Dugout, featured in “Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome,” or opt for a luxurious cave-style room at The Desert Cave.
Broken Hill, New South Wales: This artistic outback town, known for its role in “Mad Max” films and “Priscilla Queen of the Desert,” offers numerous attractions. Visit art galleries, famous sculptures, and the Mad Max 2 Museum. Don’t miss the Broken Heel Festival in September to celebrate the town’s cinematic heritage.
Australia’s diverse landscapes continue to captivate filmmakers and travelers alike, making it a top destination for movie buffs eager to explore the real-world settings of their favorite films.
