Canon Unveils Development of EOS R1: A New Flagship Model for the EOS R System

Canon Inc. has announced the development of the EOS R1, a groundbreaking full-frame mirrorless camera that will serve as the first flagship model for the EOS R SYSTEM. Slated for release in 2024, the EOS R1 is set to revolutionize professional photography with its RF mount and advanced technology.

The EOS R1 is designed to meet the rigorous demands of professionals across various fields, including sports, news reporting, and video production. This camera promises exceptional performance in both still photography and video, combining Canon’s cutting-edge innovations with the durability and reliability expected from a flagship model.

Cutting-Edge Technology

At the heart of the EOS R1 is the newly developed image processor, the DIGIC Accelerator, which works alongside the existing DIGIC X processor. This powerful combination, paired with a new CMOS sensor, allows for the processing of large volumes of data at unprecedented speeds. The result is remarkable advancements in Auto Focus (AF) and other functionalities.

High-Speed, High-Accuracy AF

Canon has integrated deep learning technology with its new image processing system to achieve unparalleled subject recognition. The EOS R1 boasts improved subject tracking accuracy, enabling continuous tracking of a target even in dynamic environments like team sports. The innovative AF “Action Priority” function rapidly analyzes subject movements, automatically shifting the AF frame to capture decisive moments in unpredictable scenarios.

Enhanced Image Quality

Canon has also focused on improving image quality with the EOS R1. The camera incorporates an advanced noise reduction function, previously developed for PC software, to enhance image clarity and support user creativity. This feature is especially beneficial in low-light conditions, ensuring high-quality results.

Field Testing and Future Prospects

Canon is currently conducting field tests of the EOS R1, aiming to capture definitive and impactful moments at upcoming international sporting events. This testing phase is crucial for ensuring the camera meets the highest standards of performance and reliability.

Expanding the EOS R SYSTEM

The development of the EOS R1 reflects Canon’s commitment to expanding the EOS R SYSTEM lineup. By continually introducing innovative cameras and RF lenses, Canon aims to meet the diverse needs of photographers and videographers, contributing to the evolution of photography and video culture.
