The heartbeat of a neighborhood lies in its spaces, the activities within them, and the vibrant individuals who call it home. Recognizing this essence, the National Heritage Board (NHB) introduces its groundbreaking Heritage Activation Node (HAN) initiative, a platform designed to spotlight and amplify the unique heritage of Singapore’s diverse neighborhoods.
Launching its inaugural node in the iconic Katong-Joo Chiat precinct, NHB celebrates the rich multicultural tapestry, vibrant shophouses, and culinary delights that define this beloved neighborhood. This launch heralds the beginning of a series of HANs set to debut in various locales throughout the year, each tailored to the distinct character and needs of its community.
Central to the HAN initiative is community engagement, with NHB forging partnerships with local groups such as Katong Culture, Eurasian Association, and Haig Road Hawkers and Merchants Association. This collaborative effort ensures sustained community involvement, fostering a sense of ownership and pride in preserving neighborhood heritage.
Each HAN is designed to showcase the unique heritage of its locale through three core components: Heritage Spaces, Heritage Programming, and Heritage Champions. Leveraging existing assets and introducing new offerings, these nodes promise a diverse array of heritage events and activities for all to enjoy, tailored to the history and contributions of each community partner.
To mark the unveiling of HAN @ Katong-Joo Chiat, a vibrant launch festival is set to take place on April 20th and 21st. Boasting over 25 programs co-organized with more than 20 partners, highlights include a community mural unveiling, heritage art creation, cultural performances, guided trails, and an interactive HiddenSG @ Katong-Joo Chiat game with enticing prizes.
As part of the launch, NHB and Katong Culture will issue a public Call for Collaborations on April 20th, inviting community groups and individuals to submit their ideas for heritage projects. This inclusive approach aims to empower all members of the community to contribute to the preservation and celebration of their shared heritage.
The HAN initiative is a cornerstone of NHB’s Our SG Heritage Plan 2.0, aimed at fostering community engagement and collaborative heritage projects. Through training and support for Heritage Champions, NHB seeks to equip volunteers with the skills and knowledge to sustainably manage heritage offerings, ensuring the legacy of Singapore’s cultural heritage endures for generations to come.
