Marimekko’s Spring/Summer 2024 Collection Celebrates 60 Years of Iconic Design

Marimekko marks a significant milestone in 2024 as it honors the 60th anniversary of its legendary Unikko print. Originating in 1964 from the imaginative genius of Maija Isola, Unikko has evolved into a globally recognized symbol of fashion and art, transcending cultural boundaries.

For the Spring/Summer 2024 season, Marimekko unveils a collection that seamlessly merges feminine silhouettes with contemporary utilitarian workwear, embodying the brand’s rich design legacy. This captivating blend of styles brings together print, minimalism, and utilitarianism, featuring robust materials like washed canvas and heavy cotton-twill alongside breezy cupro and vibrant poplin in printed dresses and relaxed summer layering pieces.

The seasonal color palette is a symphony of contrasting hues, with harmonious tones of Dijon brown, ash grey, endive, and antique white mingling with invigorating shades of fuchsia, prism pink, tangerine, chlorophyll green, and sodalite.

To complement the abstract essence of the Unikko print, Marimekko introduces five fresh interpretations of abstract floral designs by Finnish artist Antti Kekki. These captivating patterns, including Helakka (bright), Kolmikko (triplet), Malja (toast), Nokturno (nocturne), and Poiminto (pinning), reflect Kekki’s distinctive papercut technique, offering a contemporary twist on the classic floral motif.

In addition to the floral prints, stripes add a sense of rhythm to the collection, drawing from Marimekko’s rich archive with patterns like Maalis (march), Merirosvo (pirate), Patja (mattress), and Vesi (water) by Maija Isola, as well as Tasaraita (even stripe) by Annika Rimala and Piccolo by Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi.

Marimekko remains committed to sustainability, incorporating more organic and recycled materials into its collections season after season. For Spring/Summer 2024, all swimwear pieces feature 78 percent ECONYL, a regenerated nylon made from ocean and landfill waste, while the bags and accessories assortment includes recycled materials, such as the new knitted bag series crafted from 100 percent recycled polyester.

With its dedication to longevity and innovation, Marimekko continues to captivate fashion enthusiasts worldwide, offering a timeless blend of heritage and contemporary style in every piece.
