Science Centre Singapore Launches Horizon Hydrogen Grand Prix Singapore Series, Energised by Chevron

In a bid to drive renewable energy advocacy and foster STEM education, Science Centre Singapore (SCS) is gearing up to host the inaugural Horizon Hydrogen Grand Prix (H2GP) Singapore series, powered by Chevron Singapore Pte Ltd (Chevron) and organised by Horizon Educational.

This groundbreaking programme invites students to immerse themselves in the world of renewable energy by designing, engineering, and racing small model remote-controlled fuel cell cars powered by hydrogen. Through hands-on experience, students will develop essential STEM skills while gaining a deeper understanding of the entire hydrogen value chain.

Notably, the H2GP Singapore series stands out as the only global school-based educational programme offering high school students the chance to explore hydrogen fuel cell technology. Participants will embark on a journey to produce their own hydrogen and store it in specialised canisters before using it to power their self-built model cars. This innovative approach not only fosters scientific curiosity but also nurtures teamwork, creativity, and innovation among students.

The initiative underscores Science Centre Singapore’s commitment to promoting sustainable energy alternatives and raising awareness about the transformative potential of hydrogen fuel cells. It aligns seamlessly with the Singapore Government’s vision to integrate low-carbon hydrogen into the nation’s energy landscape, aiming to supply up to half of Singapore’s power needs by 2050 and achieve net-zero emissions by mid-century.

To prepare for the Singapore Finals event on August 3rd and 4th, 2024, participating teachers will implement an innovative syllabus at their respective schools, incorporating approximately three hours of activities per week based on training and resources provided during a recent teachers’ development session at SCS.

The winning team from the Singapore Finals will earn the opportunity to compete at the World Championship in Anaheim, California, USA, from September 9th to 12th, 2024.

With registrations now closed, the H2GP Singapore series has attracted 20 teams comprising 96 student participants from various schools. The national race promises to be a thrilling event, with a public fiesta accompanying the action on August 3rd and 4th, 2024.
