OH! Open House Celebrates a Decade of Art Exploration with Kampong Gelam Art Walkabout

OH! Open House, the independent arts organization renowned for its immersive art experiences, is set to take art enthusiasts on a captivating journey through Kampong Gelam this March. Titled “OH! Kampong Gelam,” this signature art walk will feature 11 thought-provoking artworks curated by Alan Oei, Executive Director of OH! Open House. Renowned contemporary Singapore artists, including Jane Lee and Ezzam Rahman, will be joined by internationally acclaimed Thai artist Ruangsak Anuwatwimon and the Malaysian artist collective Pangrok Sulap.

Peeling Back the Layers with “Palimpsest”

Under the theme of “Palimpsest,” OH! Open House delves into the layers of Kampong Gelam’s rich history. The art walk aims to unravel how maps and master plans have repeatedly shaped this neighborhood, transitioning it from a cosmopolitan port to a Malay seat of power and cultural hub. The consequences of these transformations on Kampong Gelam’s communities will be explored through the lens of contemporary art.

A Milestone Year for OH! Open House

This year marks a significant milestone for OH! Open House as it celebrates its 10th year as a charity and the 10th edition of its iconic art walk. Previous editions have taken art enthusiasts on explorations of neighborhoods such as Tiong Bahru, Holland Village, and Potong Pasir. Guided by passionate volunteers, participants have had the unique opportunity to discover site-specific artworks in public areas, private shops, and homes.

In 2018, OH!’s art walk challenged nearly 5,000 guests’ understanding of Singapore’s colonial past by exploring the history of Emerald Hill, a former nutmeg plantation nestled in the heart of Singapore’s bustling shopping belt.
