In celebration just days before Royal Caribbean International’s 55th anniversary, the cruise line joined forces with legendary sports icon Lionel Messi to introduce the Icon of the Seas – a groundbreaking vessel that promises to redefine the very essence of vacations. The unveiling took place at a star-studded naming ceremony in Miami, setting the stage for a new era in cruise travel.
Hosted by the charismatic four-time Emmy award-winning host, Mario Lopez, the momentous event unfolded in the AquaDome neighborhood, a testament to the innovation and experiential marvels that await passengers on the Icon of the Seas. Messi, widely hailed as the “Icon of Icons,” bestowed his blessing on this seven-year-in-the-making milestone, emphasizing the ship’s commitment to providing the ultimate family vacation experience.
The celebration brought together Royal Caribbean executives, dedicated crew members, employees, fans, and partners, including the Meyer Turku shipyard and Inter Miami CF. Messi, an eight-time Ballon d’Or award-winner and TIME’s 2023 Athlete of the Year, marked the occasion with a bottle-breaking ceremony that symbolized the commencement of a remarkable journey for the millions of families who will create lasting memories aboard the Icon of the Seas.
Revealed to the world in October 2022, Icon witnessed an unprecedented surge in bookings, setting new records for Royal Caribbean with the highest volume booking week in the cruise line’s then 53-year history. Sharing the stage with Messi were Jason Liberty, President and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group; Michael Bayley, President and CEO of Royal Caribbean International; and Icon’s captain, Henrik Loy.
The Icon of the Seas promises an unparalleled vacation experience, combining the best elements of various holiday styles. With eight distinct neighborhoods that function as destinations in themselves, passengers can expect a range of thrilling experiences, from beach retreats to resort escapes and theme park adventures. Highlights include six record-breaking waterslides at Category 6, the Crown’s Edge experience at 154 feet above the ocean, and the first suspended infinity pool at sea among the seven pools available – one for every day of the week.
This game-changing vessel features over 40 restaurants, bars, and lounges, along with deck-defying entertainment spanning air, ice, water, and theater. The Icon of the Seas is poised to elevate the cruise experience to unprecedented heights, offering a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation for all who come aboard.
