Lufthansa Group Expands Green Fares Testing to Long-Haul Flights: A Sustainable Leap in Air Travel

In a significant move towards sustainable aviation, the Lufthansa Group has announced the extension of its Green Fares to long-haul flights, with initial testing on twelve selected routes commencing from November 30. This groundbreaking initiative aligns with the group’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and offering eco-friendly alternatives for travelers.

Green Fares: A Pioneer in Sustainable Air Travel

Building upon the success of Green Fares introduced for routes within Europe and to North Africa earlier this year, the Lufthansa Group is now pushing the boundaries by testing these environmentally conscious fares on long-haul flights. The initial test routes, effective from 30 November, include journeys from Singapore to London, Hong Kong to London, and Bangkok to Vienna, among others.

Simple, Convenient, and Sustainable Booking

Green Fares are designed to make sustainable flying accessible to everyone. By seamlessly integrating individual, flight-related CO2 emissions offsetting through Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and contributing to high-quality climate protection projects, the Lufthansa Group aims to provide a hassle-free and eco-friendly booking experience.

Growing Demand for Green Fares

Since the introduction of Green Fares for shorter routes earlier this year, the response has been overwhelming. Over 500,000 passengers have opted for Green Fares, showcasing a growing demand for more sustainable travel options among consumers.

CO2 Compensation Portfolio Expansion

The Green Fares initiative includes full offsetting of CO2 emissions through the use of SAF and contributions to climate protection projects. The Lufthansa Group’s compensation portfolio has expanded to encompass 15 projects, including recent additions of technology-based projects for long-term CO2 binding. With partners like myclimate, Climate Austria, SQUAKE, and ClimatePartner, the group is actively promoting the development of the CO2 compensation market toward innovative and sustainable technologies.

Twelve Selected Test Routes

The long-haul Green Fares will be available on twelve selected routes, covering destinations such as Vienna, Kinshasa, Bengaluru, Miami, London, Seoul, Frankfurt, Nairobi, Paris, Zurich, and Los Angeles. Participating airlines include Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, and SWISS.

Lufthansa Group’s Commitment to Sustainability

The Lufthansa Group has set ambitious climate protection goals, aiming for a neutral CO2 balance by 2050 and a 50% reduction in net CO2 emissions by 2030 compared to 2019. The group’s commitment extends to fleet modernization, increased use of SAF, continuous optimization of flight operations, and offering travelers sustainable choices. The Lufthansa Group actively supports global climate and weather research and consistently receives positive ratings for its sustainability efforts from independent organizations.

As the aviation industry strives for a greener future, the Lufthansa Group’s Green Fares on long-haul flights mark a significant step towards sustainable air travel, offering passengers a conscientious choice for their journeys.
