In a significant leap towards revolutionizing production, research and development, and customer experience in the automotive industry, Hyundai Motor Group officially inaugurated the Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center Singapore (HMGICS) today. This cutting-edge facility is poised to accelerate the realization of the Group’s visionary approach to future mobility.
The HMGICS introduces a groundbreaking ‘smart urban mobility hub’ concept, featuring a highly automated flexible production system and innovative ways for electric vehicle (EV) buyers to engage with their vehicles and the Hyundai brand. Symbolizing the Group’s commitment to sustainable mobility solutions and progressive customer experiences, this center positions itself as a key player in the electrification era over the next 50 years.
Given Hyundai Motor Group’s global reputation for innovation, Singapore was chosen as the ideal location for its first smart urban mobility hub. Acting as one of two innovation pillars for the Group, HMGICS aims to lead the company’s future in the electrification era, emphasizing its ambition to become a 100-year company.
HMGICS employs a highly automated, flexible cell-based production system, departing from traditional manufacturing approaches. Approximately 50 percent of tasks are executed by 200 robots, showcasing unprecedented collaboration between humans, robotics, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. Operating as a digital twin Meta-Factory, the facility synchronizes the virtual and physical worlds in real-time, allowing humans and robots to cooperate in innovative ways.
Beyond manufacturing, HMGICS sets new standards for customer experience by offering smart urban mobility solutions that redefine the entire customer journey. The cell-based production system enhances customization options, allowing customers to tailor specifications from the comfort of their homes. A virtual reality (VR) tour option and on-site ‘Gurus’ provide in-depth insights into Hyundai’s mobility offerings, creating an engaging and immersive experience.
HMGICS extends its commitment to sustainable urban growth with a Smart Farm, addressing Singapore’s food production challenges. The Smart Farm utilizes automated systems and robotics to produce up to nine different crops within the facility. Harvested produce is not only given to visitors as souvenirs but also donated to local communities. The crops will feature in a farm-to-table restaurant, aligning with Singapore’s 30 by 30 policy promoting alternative agricultural technologies.
In a show of commitment to Singapore’s growth, HMGICS has signed multiple Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs). Collaborations with Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Business Federation, Singapore Manufacturing Federation, and PTC Logistics highlight the center’s dedication to nurturing local talent, advancing technology, and supporting Singapore’s initiatives in hydrogen energy.
Hyundai Motor Group’s Innovation Center signifies not only a transformative approach to manufacturing and customer interaction but also a collaborative journey with Singapore towards a future of innovative, sustainable mobility solutions.
