Iconic Singapore Landmarks Shine Purple and Yellow for World Alzheimer’s Day

In a heartfelt tribute to World Alzheimer’s Day, two heartland malls, Northpoint City in Yishun and Century Square in Tampines, illuminated the night with a radiant display of purple light. This poignant light-up event, part of the #ShineForDementia initiative, brought together iconic buildings from across Singapore to raise awareness about dementia and the people it affects.

Dementia Advocacy in Singapore

Organized by Dementia Singapore, this initiative seeks to shed light on dementia’s impact on individuals living with the condition, caregivers, family members, healthcare professionals, and community care workers. September, recognized globally as World Alzheimer’s Month, becomes a platform for advocacy and awareness-building activities. The initiative also aligns with the Dementia-Friendly Singapore (DFSG) movement led by the Agency for Integrated Care (AIC).

Purple, universally recognized as the symbolic color for dementia, was chosen to illuminate these landmarks, while the color yellow represents positivity, offering a stark contrast to the stigma and negativity often associated with the condition.

Heartland Malls Join the Cause

In a notable first, two heartland locations, Northpoint City in Yishun and Century Square in Tampines, managed by Frasers Property Singapore, participated in the #ShineForDementia initiative this year. They joined The Centrepoint along Orchard Road, another Frasers Property Singapore-managed property, in this touching display of support.

Singapore’s Iconic Landmarks Shine Bright

Four other iconic Singapore landmarks that participated in the #ShineForDementia initiative last year also joined in this year’s event. These include the Singapore Flyer, Esplanade – Theatres by the Bay, Singapore Sports Hub, and National Gallery Singapore.

Singapore Sports Hub, a dedicated supporter of the cause since its inception in 2021, will once again light up its National Stadium in honor of World Alzheimer’s Day this year.

A Message of Support

Ms. Grace Low, Head of Customer and Community Engagement and Lead of the Accessibility Taskforce at The Esplanade Co Ltd, expressed their pride in lighting up the domes of Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay in purple and yellow. She highlighted that beyond the light-up event, Esplanade has been actively involved in initiatives to support persons with dementia and their caregivers.

As these landmarks shine brightly in purple and yellow, they send a powerful message of solidarity, awareness, and support for those affected by dementia. The #ShineForDementia initiative continues to make a meaningful impact, bringing the community together to advocate for a more dementia-friendly Singapore.
