The Mondrian Singapore Duxton has officially raised the curtain on a spectacular art-infused launch event that will leave you in awe. 1 September marks the grand unveiling of a monumental 6-meter bronze sculpture by the renowned artist KAWS. This captivating sculpture, titled “WHAT PARTY,” will grace the hotel’s front and be on permanent public display, forever altering Singapore’s Chinatown skyline.
As the centerpiece of the Mondrian Singapore Duxton Art Collection, the KAWS sculpture represents a harmonious blend of performance, art, architecture, and interior design. This masterpiece by KAWS is set to captivate a diverse audience, from art enthusiasts and hotel guests to the general public. It stands as a testament to the hotel’s dedication to elevating the cultural landscape. In fact, it’s one of the most significant KAWS works to be permanently exhibited in all of Asia.
“WHAT PARTY” features the beloved character CHUM, a creation that has become synonymous with KAWS’ unique approach to reinterpreting iconic figures from popular culture. These hybridized figures reflect our shared collective spirit. The sculpture beckons to the viewer’s subconscious, making it a fitting and enduring monument for the creative and free-spirited community that Mondrian Singapore Duxton embraces.
Positioned proudly at the entrance of Mondrian, at the corner of Neil and Craig Roads, this monumental piece epitomizes the eclectic spirit of Duxton’s street culture. It stands shoulder to shoulder with heritage Singaporean Shophouses and the Pinnacle HDB public housing, while also offering a glimpse into the future with breathtaking views of the CBD skyline.
Robert C Hauck, the General Manager of Mondrian Singapore Duxton, expressed his delight at securing this remarkable sculpture. The unveiling of “WHAT PARTY” was the crowning moment of an unforgettable grand opening event that celebrated art, culture, and innovation.
The KAWS sculpture is a result of an exclusive collaboration between Mondrian Singapore Duxton and The Artling, Singapore’s foremost art collection curators and tastemakers. Over two years in the making, this partnership has given birth to a permanent collection thoughtfully integrated into the very fabric of the hotel. It showcases a diverse range of international and local talents across various mediums and practices.
The Mondrian Singapore Duxton Art Collection goes beyond the KAWS masterpiece. It features luminaries like Tracey Emin with her neon work “I Longed for You” at Bottega di Carna, as well as Ian Davenport, renowned for his ‘puddle’ paintings showcased in major galleries worldwide.
The collection also includes works by US installation specialists SOFTlab, Spaniard Fares Micue, Australia’s Emma Anna, American photographer Tyler Shields, and Singaporean talents Dawn Ng and Andre Wee.
