[Review] Ikigai Izakaya at The Riverwalk, Clarke Quay

Located at The Riverwalk in Clarke Quay, Ikigai Izakaya offers Japanese cuisine, coupled with entertainment and a view of the scenic riverfront by the Singapore River. It first opened its door in 2021.

Drawing inspiration from the Japanese concept of “ikigai” which translates to the “reason for being,” the owner seeks to elevate the traditional Japanese dining experience to new heights with bells and whistles.

We were invited for a dinner tasting and these were the items we sampled:

Assorted Kishiyaki (grilled skewers), ranging from pork belly skewers to quai egg wrapped with bacon to chicken meatballs – $7 to $8 per serving of 2 sticks
Tamogo with spicy mayo
Signature Truffle Udon – cold noodle dish, made with fine, thin and flat Kyoya Inaniwa Temomi udon from Kyoto, paired with Hotate (scallop) sashimi – $22

Signature Garlic Fried Rice
Desert

Verdict? Visit Ikigai for drinks, the ambiance and entertainment.

From classics to innovative creations, the dishes at Ikigai offers a range of flavours and textures. The food while decent, is not a showstopper. They serve more to accompany their selection of sakes and other drinks, on top of the entertainment.

The restaurant’s ambiance is one of its selling points, with picturesque alfresco dining overlooking the Singapore River and an industrial-themed interior for those who prefer an indoor setting. The modular space allows for flexibility in creating different atmospheres.

Ikigai offers an extensive range of sake options, and their Sake Buffet promotion is a good deal for sake enthusiasts. Be sure to try out their signature Sparkling Sake, Shichiken Yamanokasumi Cloudy Sparking Sake from Shichiken Brewery, located in central Japan at Hakushucho, Hokuto City, Yamanshi prefecture. The Sparking Sake was award Silver in the Sparkling category at the International Wine Challenge 2020 for Sake, among other awards.

Additionally, the entertainment offerings at Ikigai include live performances, with Kumar’s show being a highlight on select nights. Live bands and their own Club iKi events add to the vibrant atmosphere.

In essence, while the food at Ikigai Izakaya is decent, the key selling points are the restaurant’s drinks selection, ambiance and the entertainment they provide with live bands and events.
