9 Tips to Save on Your Household Electricity and Water Bills in Singapore

As the cost of living continues to rise in Singapore, it is becoming increasingly important for everyone to find ways to reduce our electricity and water bills.

Whether you are living in an HDB estate, condominium or landed property, here are nine ways to save on these bills and help the environment in the process that is applicable for everyone.

1. Turn off appliances when not in use

This is a no-brainer. Many appliances, such as televisions, computers, and game consoles, consume electricity even when they are not being used. To save on your electricity bill, make sure to turn off these appliances when you are not using them.

2. Switch to energy-efficient light bulbs

Energy-efficient light bulbs use up to 80% less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs and can last up to 25 times longer. By making the switch, you can significantly reduce your electricity bill and help the environment. Energy-efficient light bulbs are easily available at household appliances and furniture stores like IKEA and Courts.

3. Install water-efficient fixtures

Installing water-efficient fixtures such as low-flow showerheads and faucets can reduce your water bill by up to 50%. These fixtures use less water but still provide adequate water pressure. I have three bathrooms in my home and I had these installed in the showerheads for two of the bathrooms so that I can still have a choice.

4. Fix water leaks

A dripping faucet can waste up to 12,000 litres of water per year, increasing your water bill significantly. Make sure to fix any water leaks in your home as soon as possible to prevent this from happening. This may seem like a small thing, but it all adds up over time!

5. Use natural light

Instead of turning on the lights during the day, use natural light to illuminate your home. This can help reduce your electricity bill and also provide a more pleasant and relaxing atmosphere.

6. Use a fan instead of air conditioning

Air conditioning can be a major contributor to your electricity bill. Consider using a fan instead, or only using air conditioning in the rooms you spend the most time in.

7. Take shorter showers

Showers can use a lot of water, especially if they are long. Consider taking shorter showers to save on your water bill. If you have a bathtub, avoid using it too frequently as bathtubs use a lot of water.

8. Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth

Leaving the tap running while brushing your teeth can waste a lot of water. Turn off the tap and only turn it back on when you need to rinse. Again, this may seem like a small thing, but it all adds up.

9. Cook with a microwave or pressure cooker

Microwaves and pressure cookers use less energy than traditional stovetops, which can save you money on your electricity bill. Consider using them more for quick, simple meals like cooking instant noodle or other ready-to-eat food.

In conclusion, by implementing these 9 tips, you should be able to significantly reduce your electricity and water bills, helping you to save money and contribute to a more sustainable future at the same time. I am sure these tips work because according to the Public Utility Board, my electricity and water bills are consistently below the national average and my neighbours’ average in the same estate.
