As we get older, certain biological processes cause the brain’s functions to decrease in efficiency. The blood flow slows down and the volume of the brain begins to shrink, leading to a degree of loss in nerve cell connections. But, don’t despair, as this doesn’t mean you can’t keep your brain sharp even in old age. In fact, with our advice on how to stay intellectually-fit, you’ll likely feel just as alert and capable (if not even more) as at a younger age. Here’s what you can do.
It is very important to provide regular exercise for your brain, in the form of interesting mental stimulation. Think of the brain as a muscle – the harder you work the muscle, the stronger it’ll get.
Generally, any kind of intellectual stimulation will oil the gears of your thinking-machine. Reading, solving crossword puzzles, learning new skills – whatever gets your brain going will do. Of course, you don’t need to force yourself to think about the things you don’t care about. For the state of your cognitive functions, it’s enough to remember that the brain needs action, or it’ll become lazy and dull.
After exercising the mind, it’s time to exercise the body as well. Namely, regular exercise is directly correlated to our mental condition, as it helps to maintain a healthy blood flow to the brain and lowers the chance of dementia.
Of course, you shouldn’t wait until you turn 60 to start exercising. No matter if you’re young or old, male or female, fit or unfit – start exercising right now and thank us later. In fact, women have had a special incentive to start working out recently, during the Women’s Health Week. As the Mother’s Day falls exactly at the beginning of the said week, women are reminded to keep their bodies healthy, not just for themselves and their minds, but for their sons and daughters as well.
Eating properly is important as the brain craves certain substances that’ll keep it in top shape. Vegetables and fish rich in Omega-3 fatty acids are especially healthy in this regard. Tuna and mackerel are good for you, while you should avoid any trans fats or hydrogenated oils.
Fruit can also have positive effects. You don’t need to eat a truckload of it every day, though. An occasional banana or a refreshing lemonade drink will be enough for the proper functioning of your mental faculties, in addition to the aforementioned fish and veggies.
A solid anti-aging supplement can also be a useful addition to your daily program. Some of them are delicious, so we won’t be surprised if you’re tempted to take more than what was prescribed each day!
We’ve already mentioned that having a regular blood flow is extremely important when it comes to brain fitness. Therefore, you will need to control your blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Not only will it keep your brain sharp, but you’ll lower the risk of stroke and heart disease.
Another thing we’ve mentioned is that fatty acids are good for your cognitive functions, however, they’re also good for lowering cholesterol and blood pressure. Run like the wind from trans fats, and reduce the intake of saturated fats.
Smoking and drinking are decidedly in the category of things to avoid. Quit smoking before it kills you, regardless of your age and brain sharpness.
As for alcohol, in moderation, it can even have a healthy effect on the overall human organism. Enjoying a glass of wine or a bottle of beer on occasions won’t hurt you. However, you won’t go wrong even if you decide to completely rid yourself of alcoholic drinks, after realizing that going straight edge is a cool direction for your old-age reinvention.
As we said in the introduction, you shouldn’t worry about the power of your mental faculties declining, as you have control over their health. Follow our tips, keep your brain engaged, and you’ll be a-okay.
