Savour Singapore in Every Bite! The Singapore Food Festival 2021 and Klook are collaborating to bring you one-of-a-kind experiences to send your tastebuds travelling around Singapore.
We attend one of their curated experience – A Heritage Tour of Little India, to learn more about the history of the area as well as the spice of life that is symbolic of local Indian cuisines. Ever wonder what is one common ingredient that goes into our Biryani, Vadai, Masala tea, Murukku and Ladoo? The answer – SPICE.
Hosted by a home-grown private tour group, tribe, this Little India walking tour will take. you around the Little India/ Farrer Park area, visiting traditional provision shops, hawker stalls, a wet market, restaurants, and various local establishments to learn about the people and heritage.
You get to learn from tribe’s Little India resident experts, the basics of spices, exploring the difference between masala and curry powder, while digging into classic Indian dishes like Appam, Pani Puri, Tandoori Chicken, Masala Mutton, Kothu prata, Indian filter coffee, Masala tea and Ladoo.
Without giving away too much of the tour to spoil the fun, here are some of the photos we took during the two-and-a-half-hour walking tour to share on our experience.
The first portion of the tour is focused on learning about the different kinds of spices used in local Indian cooking, how to buy and prepare them. This included a visit to various local shops to see the spices and learn their appearances, names, smells and texture.
With Singapore’s hawker culture recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, no food or cultural tour in Singapore is complete without a visit to a local hawker centre and wet market. The guides from tribe has done their homework well and we got to speak with some of the hawkers and market stall owners to learn more about their trade and lives. Nothing touristy or gimmicky here, just real-life stories of ordinary working Singaporeans.
Saving the treats for last, we were brought to various restaurants and eateries to savour some of the most iconic local Indian snacks and dishes to round up the tour with a full belly, after two hours of walking.
All in all, it was an interesting experience for Asher and me. We live near the Little India area and am familiar with the major malls and eateries around. However, the tour exposed us to more in-depth details and knowledge of the culture, heritage and culinary delights in Little India. I would recommend this tour for food and culture lovers.
