[Review] Sumptuous Spanish Small plates: Tapas 24 by Michelin-starred Chef Now In Singapore- Delivery and Takeaway Available

While we can’t travel to Barcelona to enjoy the sights and sounds, we can still experience choice Spanish cuisine with the opening of the first Tapas 24 outlet in Asia at The Quayside in Robertson Quay in Singapore.

The popular tapas joint from Barcelona was founded in 2007 by Michelin-starred Spanish Chef Carles Abellan and is adored by gourmands for its fun and delicious tapas spread, including their signature bikini sandwich.

The restaurant is currently closed for dine-in due to P2HA in Singapore, but is available for both delivery and takeaway.

We had the good fortune to snag a table for a media tasting just before Singapore entered into lockdown mode and yes, the food and drinks as well as ambient was amazing.

The restaurant was packed when we arrived at around 7.15pm, full of live and bustling with guests enthusiastically enjoying their food and drinks. We had a casual chat with the friendly General Manager and a few of her service staff and they expressed their worries about making sure that guests have the best experience, given their happy problem of having overwhelming turnout in just their first week of opening, with very limited publicity. It was reassuring to know that the crew is not just concerned about delivering great food, but the overall dining experience as well, ensuring guests do not have to wait too long for their food and drinks.

The menu was very fun to scrutinise, featuring a wide array of dishes in small and large sharing portions. Here are the dishes we sampled:

Ensaladilla Rusa with Olives – award-winning “Russian Salad” by Chef Carles Abellan, generous servings of potatoes with tuna and olives (S$16)
Assorted cocktails
Octopus Galician Style – octopus and potatoes dressed with olive oil and a sprinkling of smoked paprika “de La Vera” (S$22)
Spanish Tortilla “Mallorcan Style” – Spanish omelette with a creamy centre, confit potatoes, caramelised onions and chorizo (S$12)
Inside the omelette
The signature “Tapas 24” Bikini Sandwich – toasted sandwich with black truffles, Iberico ham and buffalo mozzarella (S$16)
The beautiful sticky cheese when you pull the sandwich apart
Pan Con Tomate – toasted Catalonian Coca bread, fresh Roma tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil and salt (S$8, not available for delivery and takeout)
Olive Marinadas – marinated olives with citrus and chili (S$10)
Barceloneta’s Bomba – deep-fried breaded ball of potatoes with pork and beef filling, topped with “Bravas” sauce and All i Oli, slightly spicy (S$6, not available for delivery and takeout)
Inside the Bomba when you spilt it open
Signature Roasted Eggplant, Escalivada with Sobrasada -Josper roasted eggplant with cured sausage from Balearic Islands, topped with Parmigiano-Reggiano, honey and pumpkin seeds (S$12)
Andalusian Gazpacho – cold refreshing soup of Roma tomatoes, capsicum and olive oil, served with summer salsa and egg (S$14)
Brie Cheesecake (S$10)

The stand-out items for us were the crowd favourites recommended by the restaurant General Manager – the roasted eggplant, Russian salad, bikini sandwich and the Bomba.

if we have to pick a must-order dish, it would be the roasted eggplant for its rich earthy flavour, slightly crunchy outer texture with a soft, moist interior. Loved this and could have eaten another serving.

The Russian salad was an interesting dish to start off the meal with its unique presentation and fun way of eating by dipping the bread sticks. Likewise, the bikini sandwich is perfect for sharing and who can resist stretchy mozzarella cheese!

Overall, we enjoyed about all the little dishes and when eating a tapas meal, the key thing is the company around you and the overall communal, free-spirited ambient which Tapas 24 delivered.

While we are unable to dine-in for now, Tapas 24 is definitely worth a visit when the safe distancing measures are relaxed for restaurant dine-ins. For those who can’t wait that long, check out their delivery and takeaway options. Full menu and details are available here.
