Earlier this year, Sir James Dyson personally revealed Dyson’s latest beauty technology, the Dyson Corrale – the only straightener with flexing plate technology that shape to gather hair, delivering enhanced styling with less reliance on heat, whilst being cord-free. You can watch the video of James Dyson introducing the new technology here:
The Dyson Corrale is now available in Singapore and we got our hands on a unit to try it out.
First Impressions
As we have all come to expect of the Dyson brand, the Dyson Corrale straightener looks and feels sleek and premium. Does it deliver magic as one might expect from its price tag?
The Dyson Corrale straightener has a metallic futuristic design and an ergonomic dock. It will look good displayed on any dresser. The magnetic charging cable also clicks in place easily (to the charging dock or the straightener itself).
The Dyson Corrale fully recharges in 70 minutes and provides up to 30 minutes of cord-free usage. For longer styling sessions, you can rest the straightener in the charging dock at intervals whilst styling. Alternatively, you can use the Dyson Corrale with the charging cable attached.
We like the velvet travel case which comes along with the Dyson Corrale. This will make packing the Dyson Corrale along for vacations staycations a breeze. A flight mode feature also ensures the device meets air travel standards and can be packed in cabin luggage for travel (except for Japan where stricter regulations mean you will not be able to fly in or out of any Japanese airports with a battery powered straightener) – unlikely that we will be travelling overseas anytime soon given the Covid restrictions on international travel, but just for your info.
We also like the Dyson Corrale for its intuitive design- clear OLED screen displays battery level, temperature control and charging status during use. It has three heat settings – 165°C, 185°C and 210°C.
What’s so Special about the Dyson Corrale?
At S$699, it is definitely not the cheapest hair straightener out there. So we want to know- what is the difference between the Dyson Corrale and other hair straighteners in the market? The Dyson Corrale touts two key selling points:
Unique Flexing Plate Technology – Gathers hair, Less reliance on heat
Unlike traditional straighteners, the patented unique flexing plates of the Dyson Corrale straightener mould to shape and gather the hair, giving the user greater control and therefore elevating the styling results, whilst reducing the reliance on heat. As the plates adapt to the hair, they apply tension more evenly and stop strands splaying. Hear it from Sir James Dyson himself:
We have been worried about the style results and heat damage from flat plate straighteners. Flat hair irons apply tension and heat only on the thickest part of the hair tress, the strands at the edges are not clamped, leaving them slack, unheated and leaving flyaways. It requires multiple passes on the same section of hair tress to give an even look, by which time excess heat may have caused reduced strength and less gloss.
We discovered that if the plates could conform to the precise profile of the tress, then with each pass we could apply the correct tension to all the hair strands. This means that we get an enhanced style and without excessive heat damage. We simply do not need the heat that others apply. We engineered unique flexing plates of magnesium copper, wired eroded to a precise accuracy of 65 microns to adapt to the shape of the hair tress. The copper plates wrap around the tress, applying even heat and tension to all the hair strands, keeping them aligned. – James Dyson, Founder and Chief Engineer
Use it Cord-Free
The Dyson Corrale boosts build-in lithium-ion battery, which allows for up to 30 minutes of cord-free usage. Say bye to dangling cable interfering with your styling!
That said, there is a slight trade-off in terms of weight- at 561g, the Dyson Corrale can feel a little on the heavier side.
Our Experience with Dyson Corrale
Since our model’s hair is straight to begin with, we tried making curls. Yes you read that right- we used the Dyson Corrale Straightener to create curls. We followed the Dyson’s “beach curls” tutorial and below is our result. You can also follow Dyson’s tutorials to achieve other styles like True curls, C curls, Smooth and sleek.
As hair-styling noobs, we went through the same section of hair repeatedly to get the curl “just right”. After doing so, we are happy to report that the hair still looked healthy and maintained its gloss. We take this as testimony to Dyson’s promise of “enhanced style and without excessive heat damage”. A little tip: it is easier to style the hair in smaller sections.
Flexing Plate Technology- Better for Thick Hair
Overall, we think the star technology of Dysons’s latest offering- flexing plates –is most relevant for those blessed with thick hair. For those, with finer and less voluminous hair, the flexing technology could feel superfluous as the “flexing” of the plates does not seem sensitive enough to conform to the flatter profile of the thinner tress. In addition, the device did feel a tad heavy, especially when you need to hold it to style a full head of hair for more than 20 minutes.
Verdict: Can consider investing in the Dyson Corrale if for one, you have thick hair (to reap the most benefit out of the “flexing plate” technology) and secondly, you style your hair with heat very regularly.
