Yale-NUS student charged for taking shower videos, upskirt photos to relieve stress

A 26-year-old man whose identity has been placed under a gag order has been charged with eight charges of insulting a woman’s modesty on Monday (Jan 13), with another 16 charges taken into consideration for sentencing.

What happened with this peeping tom Yale-NUS student this time?

The man had taken several photos and videos of women in the shower. He also saved a lot of upskirt videos and photos on his phone. Police found evidence of wiped files that included the illicitly-taken videos on his hard drive.

His motive for taking upskirt and showering photos and videos of girls? To help relieve the stress of academics.

How was the new Yale-NUS pervert caught?

According to reports from Channel News Asia, the 26-year-old accused was living together with other female students. He had been peeping at them in their shared bathroom for quite some time, but was caught on March 3, 2019.

The report said that one of his suitemates was taking a bath when she heard noises behind her, and saw a pair of shoes underneath the shower door. She then looked up and saw a mobile phone, then screamed for her boyfriend.

She quickly covered up, while the accused scuttled quickly back to their shared couch in the living area. He then proceeded to delete all incriminating evidence. When the girl and her boyfriend saw him, he denied doing anything wrong, and offered up his phone for examination (which was now clean).

He then said that someone else from a different floor or part of the building could have been the culprit.

The victim reported the matter to the school authorities, and the pertinent CCTV cameras were reviewed, but none showed the area that was in question.

When the victim said that she was going to lodge a police report on top of the school notification, the accused did not confess at first. But just as the victim was about to leave for the police station, the peeping tom gathered all the other suitemates and confessed to filming the victim, but to only one instance.

Police finally arrest the Yale-NUS peeping tom

The victim and the peeping tom reportedly had a meeting at a church before the former reported him to the police. The same report said that the victim, the victim’s parents, the accused, and his parents had a meeting in an unnamed religious venue.

After the meeting, the victim finally reported the matter to the police, a full ten days after the incident.

Accused tried to cover his tracks

The police raided the accused’s room and searched his property. The report said that previously-deleted videos of showering girls and upskirt videos were recovered.

His defense lawyer from Invictus Law, Joseph Tan, said that the accused liked watching the videos or looking at the photos when schoolwork put too much pressure on him.

Errata: Previous article mentioned two accused in cases insulting a woman’s modestly. Yale-NUS has asserted that a man in a previous case heard before court and the case mentioned above are the same.
