Over the next three years, a total of 3.5 million euros will be dedicated to the launch of an ambitious research project aimed at finding a cure for rheumatoid polyarthritis, a joint and bone disease, which Caroline Wozniacki was diagnosed within 2018.
This auto-immune disease destroys joints in the hands and feet, which can deform them and be a huge handicap. It primarily affects women and young adults but also children.
Clarins has supported an independent Foundation created by the Courtin family and Wozniacki. This isn’t the first time, however, that Clarins has been linked to tennis. In 1986, through the encouragement of the brand’s founder, Jacques Courtin-Clarins, Clarins sponsored the leading female tennis tournament event in Paris.
Jacques Courtin-Clarins’ wife, Maria-Luisa, suffered from rheumatoid polyarthritis. Distraught over her suffering, Jacques Courtin-Clarins teamed up with Denis Bloch (whose 7-year-old son was affected by the disease as well) in 1989 and founded the Association for Polyarthritis Research (APR).
Working with Françoise Russo-Marie, a researcher at Inserm (the French National Institute for Health and Medical Research), they assembled a high-level scientific committee and financed several medical research projects exclusively dedicated to arthritis.
Last year, Wozniacki was diagnosed with rheumatoid polyarthritis after experiencing severe pain in her hands which hindered her ability to play tennis. Since then, and despite painful episodes, this fighter has continued her professional tennis career. She’s proof that with research, everything is possible.
Today, she lends her support to the Fondation Arthritis in a combined effort aimed at encouraging the development of new treatments for severe cases and making sure that those who suffer from this disease is taken care of in the best possible manner, every day.
Clarins has been committed to supporting arthritis research for the past 30 years. The Fondation Arthritis, just like the APR which it replaced, was created by Clarins’ founding family. It is the leading private fundraising initiative in the field of arthritis in France. Thanks to its support from Clarins, which assumes all overhead costs, 100% of the funds collected from the public go directly to research.
To further support the foundation and to highlight the partnership with Caroline Wozniacki, Clarins is renewing its ‘Tonic’ sales operation in 2020, offering a ‘Tonic’ beauty routine based on 100% plant extracts and available in a travel case.
Clarins products are available here and at Clarins boutiques islandwide.
