If you travel frequently and fancy yourself as a nomad of sort, this travel insurance designed by digital nomads for digital nomads will be perfect for you. SafetyWing provides travel medical insurance protecting nomads worldwide from just US$37 a month – a worthwhile investment considering how crazy healthcare expenses can get when you are a foreigner in an unfamiliar land.
People who are location independent fall between the cracks. Without proper access to insurance or national safety nets, healthcare costs can be a daunting challenge when crisis hits. The guys at SafetyWing knows that because they are nomads themselves.
“We built it for ourselves and also because a bunch of freelancers on the platform had the problem of not having good priced and cheap health insurance,” shared SafetyWing co-founder Sondre Rasch in an interview with Techcrunch.
Rasch and his co-founders, Sarah Beyahte Sandnes and Hans Kjellby are all nomads themselves, having moved from Norway to the Silicon Valley in the United States. The worldwide insurance coverage is provided through a partnership with insurance provider Tokio Marine and offers worldwide urgent care coverage from US$37 a month.
It is the first travel medical insurance product specifically targeted at nomads – people from all over the world, while outside their home country. The coverage includes access to a qualified global network of hospitals and doctors for unexpected medical problems and accidents. It includes coverage for Doctors, Hospitals and Emergency Medical Evacuation on the healthcare front and also for: Travel Delay, Lost Checked Luggage, Natural Disasters, Emergency Response and Natural Disasters. They even have a personal injury lawyer list in case you need a recommendation following an accident.
At only US$37 per 4 weeks, SafetyWing gives worldwide travel medical coverage (Ages 18-39, other ages available. Travel to US adds US$31 per 4 weeks). This is 1/3rd of the price compared to the biggest competitors for similar coverage. Even if you are not a permanent nomad but just someone who travels frequently for a period of time, it is worth getting this insurance coverage.
SafetyWing is available for purchase in 180 countries and can be purchased when already traveling. There is no cap on the duration of a travel.
From your chosen start date, your insurance automatically extends every 28 days until you pick an end-date. The service is extremely flexible, just like a subscription.
For every 90 days, you can use your medical coverage for 30 days in your home country if something happens while there. (15 days if your home country is the United States)
One young child per adult, up to 2 per family, age between 14 days and 10 years old, can be included on your insurance without added cost.
SafetyWing is a Y-Combinator company and the policy is administered by Tokio Marine which is one of the largest insurance companies in the world. The Policy is underwritten by certain underwriters at Lloyds.
You can purchase on behalf of the whole group traveling with you, always remember the importance behind having a service like the health insurance india service backing you up while traveling.
