Huawei sells out of Y6 Pro islandwide, police called in to control crowds

Thanks to the previous announcement that Huawei would be selling its Y6 Pro model at a whopping 73% off it’s normal price, police were called in to control the snaking queues and overwhelming response to the incredible discount.

Unfortunately, not everyone was able to get their hands on the phone as units quickly sold out all over the island. The promotion, which slashed the price of the Huawei Y6 Pro 2019 from $198 to $54 for Singaporeans and permanent residents above the age of 50, started on Friday and is running till Sunday.

The promotion, which was supposed to run all weekend, was over for some stores even before they started, as there were posters and notices outside some that the phones were already sold out. Other branches could not meet the demand for the phone even as more people formed queues.

In response to the overwhelming response to the National Day promotion, Huawei issued an official statement on their Facebook page.

Their post reads, “Due to the overwhelming demand to this NDP $54 Y6 Pro offer, we are unable to provide the vast majority of you with this promotion. We are truly sorry to have disappointed those who have showed your support from early morning.”

The brand also said that they advised people not to queue any longer as the phones were selling out very fast. The same announcement was updated as the day went by, with the detail that all the phones were sold out by noon on July 26. A few minutes later, the post said that Huawei had closed ten stores for safety and security reasons. The stores that closed early on July 26 were Tampines Mall, Bugis Junction, Lot 1 (21 Choa Chu Kang, Jurong Point, 313@Somerset, Westgate, Vivo, NEX, JEM, and Northpoint.

A representative from the brand also said, “Huawei today announced that its HUAWEI Y6 Pro 2019 handsets have been sold out island-wide and has recorded an unprecedented surge of demand for the handset. The company would like to thank members of the public for their continued support and regrets for the insufficient supply for the masses. Huawei remains committed to bringing attractive offers to all and will continue to put the interest of customers at the forefront of its business.”

Police called to control crowds

According to a report by The Straits Times, an elderly man had called the police to control the crowds at the Huawei store at Tampines Central 1, as the crowds had begun pushing and becoming unruly. Another account said that people were lined up even earlier than 8:30 in the morning.

Previous promotions

Huawei also had a previous promotion of offering free Partea to Huawei users simply by showing their phone and registering with the tea brand. This was in conjunction with their Service Days which showed people taking their phones in for maintenance and repairs.

The promotion ran during the first two weekends of July 2019, and were met with favorable responses.
