Old tech is new tech: 5 tech brands that are making a comeback and we can’t help but spend for them all over again

Even if we can all say Rest in Peace to the iPod, there are some brands that have made the comeback in today’s smartphone era.

Brands and tech that were phased out (or almost dying) at one point have made startling and powerful returns that have us reaching for our wallets–just as our parents had during the 90s and decades before.

Let’s take a look at some old tech that’s back as new tech.

Nokia

Where do we start? After a much-publicized launch of the newest 3310 3G that harkens back to our high school days of texting with a numeric keypad and snake, Nokia is set to release it’s first Android phone, the Nokia 8.

You can now have the phone you used to have in your younger years (and see if you still have the ability to text with your phone in your pocket) and the latest model with a smartphone OS. What a time to be alive.

Sony Walkman

Before CDs and floppy drives, and after vinyl records, there was the cassette tape. The Sony Walkman in 1979 was a chunky thing, bigger than a laptop power brick, and it could let you play your favorite mixtape with a friend anywhere you still had AAA batteries.

While almost every mp3 player has left the scene, the Sony Walkman remains, and is audacious enough to boast a price that rivals an iPhone! But your iPhone probably can’t play FLAC files natively and give audiophiles the orgasmic aural experience they crave. Be ready to shell out $799, though.

Nintendo Classic Mini

When graphics was a treasure and frame rate wasn’t even the concern, the Nintendo Entertainment System or NES was the device for the un-cool little kids who would grow up to dominate the IT field.

Nintendo recently released a miniature version that you still plug in to your TV, the Nintendo Classic Mini, but with all the favorite games of your childhood. We guess it’s time you taught your children how to play a game without saving your progress. All for 59.99 USD.

Palm

Do you remember those “ultra-cool” kids who had a Palm Treo as if they had meetings and insane schedules to manage? We do, and it’s still quite funny.

Upon the launch of the iPhone and Android, Palm’s webOS floundered and plunged the company into virtual obscurity so quickly, we were surprised to find out HP bought it out.

But with the apparent death of Palm, you might be seeing a comeback soon. The company has been bought by TCL, the same company that makes BlackBerry. According to reports, the Palm could be back in 2018. Will this finally put BlackBerry and Palm back in the handheld device game?

SEGA

They just don’t make games like they used to, huh?

While you may not be able to buy a brand-new fully-functioning SEGA Saturn, you may download the SEGA mobile app that lets you play the best classics they had in their heyday.

Keep in mind that while you may be reliving your Golden Axe, Sonic and Virtua Tennis memories, you can now save your progress!

What old tech are you missing that you wish would come back? Let us know in the comments!
