Singapore Food Festival: 50 cents local treats, hawker food and salted egg Shiok

The Singapore Food Festival (SFF) 2017 is back for its 24th edition.

Taking place from 14 to 30 July, this year’s SFF pays tribute to all things Singaporean, and locals and visitors alike can look forward to a delicious spread of both traditional and contemporary Singaporean flavours, interpreted through the palates of our home-grown culinary heroes.

Themed “Savour Singapore in Every Bite”, the festival will feature up to 20 gastronomic experiences that celebrate our heritage and flavours, and honour the people who work passionately to keep local culinary traditions alive.

Here are three events that you can check out:

Back by popular demand is The 50 Cents Fest: Those Years held at Chinatown Food Street. Expect 1980s hawker favourites and entertainment from that era like live Xin Yao performances.

Revive the past with dishes like Abacus Seeds (a Hakka dish made with yam), Cantonese Paper Wrapped Chicken, Hokkien Rickshaw Noodles and Ice Balls…Best of all, prices start from just 50 cents.

Where: Chinatown Food Street. Smith Street, Singapore 050335.

When: 29—30 July. Saturday 12pm-11pm; Sunday 11am-11pm. Free admission.

Into its third edition, the Hawker Spotlight 2017 honours and celebrates Singapore’s distinctive hawker culture through casting the spotlight on one of our favourite hawker centres, Maxwell Food Centre, which is also home to the Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice stall that earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand award in 2016.

Local food connoisseur Moses Lim will host a small media tour, and an on-site contest for the public will be held, so that a select group of lucky winners will also get to join Moses on this tour. More details can be found here.

Where: Maxwell Food Centre. 1 Kadayanallur Street, Singapore 069184.

When: 16 July, 3pm – 4.30pm.

Participating heritage restaurants include Palm Beach, Jumbo Seafood, Ng Ah Sio Bak Kut Teh, Goldleaf Restaurant, Fatty Weng, Hua Ting Restaurant, Tandoor, Omar Shariff Authentic Indian Cuisine, and many more.

As part of the Singapore Restaurant Festival, Restaurant Association of Singapore and Unilever Food Solutions also presents the ‘Salted Egg Shiok’ campaign which takes consumers through a map of salted egg dishes in Singapore from July to December 2017. The website www.saltedeggshiok.com will act as an aggregator of the salted egg dishes around the island.
