Dracula: Blood is Life at RWS

Horror buffs, time to sink your imaginary fangs into a theatrical spectacular this Halloween season. For those of you who are familiar with the century-old horror novel by Bram Stoker, you must have known who Count Dracula is. Yes, IS. For he still walks this earth during the witching hours and lo and behold! He has now settled in modern cosmopolitan Singapore.

In this latest electrifying stage production helmed by American playwright Steven Dietz and produced by UK theatre company Ewing Entertainment, audiences can expect a blood-curling, spine-chilling experience. British actor Keith-Lee Castle is cast as Count Dracula while the role of Lucy is played by renowned Singaporean songstress Narelle Kheng from local band The Sam Willows.

At the Gala show last Friday, I expected little as I have definitely heard of the famous Bram Stoker classic but have never got the chance to read the novel. Still, I was mind-blown. The use of stage effects were perfect. The light illusion, smoke-billowing effects, impressive lighting (that imitates lightning just feet away) and stage choreography, all of which are spectacular to say the least.

The production is underpinned by an impressive underscore by Grammy Award, Tony Award and Drama Desk Award nominee, Kevan Frost (“Taboo” on Broadway & West End) and is all brought together under the impeccable direction of Joe Harmston, best known for directing over 20 Agatha Christie productions, seen by over 2 million people in the UK.

Stage design is by veteran theatre designer, Sean Cavanagh, whose work includes Joseph & The Technicolour Dreamcoat while lighting is by Knight Of Illumination Award winner Ben Cracknell who worked on the London Olympic Ceremonies 2012.

Together, they bring to life the different scenes in Transylvania and 1800s England effortlessly.

 

 

 

All in all, it was a splendid atmospheric experience which is all made possible by the mise en scene. So yes, if you are in need of some “trick or treat” moment, then this show is for you. Get ready to soak in some old-school horror this Halloween!
